While I'm on the internet a million pop ups come up, and slows me down. How can I get them to stop. My computer is totally slow man, I need a memory stick. How much are they? My co-worker whose good with computers says he'll install a stick of memory for me for $60. Is that fair? I don't know if I trust him b/c I lent him my pc so he could check it out and he told me I needed a memory stick mainly but that he did some things and gave me some virtual memory. How do you give someone virtual memory, and It seems my computer is even slower. Should I just instal the memory myself? How do you do it, is it easy? Also I'm trying to unistall some junk off my pc and it's in a folder on my desktop titled unused desktop but they aren't showing up on the list on uninstalling installed programs, so how do I get them off my damn computer? I have a Dell dimension 2200, is this a good computer? It's totally dying, I don't know what year it is, I think 99', does anyone know? HELP ME PLEASE PEOPLE!
ok, first off, $60 for installing ram is crap, unless that includes the price of the ram. seriously, it would take under 30 seconds for me to put a new stick of ram in my box. it's like legos. next, you probably don't need a new stick of ram. you probably need to run a program like Ad-Aware, or Spybot S&D just cause i'm a cool guy, here's the links: Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html pick your flavor, and run/update it like a anti-virus. that ought to fix a lot of your problems. also, get a firewall such as Zonealarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp and, i personally suggest getting a new browser, such as Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ Yeah. Do all that. THEN think about a hardware upgrade. man. you must be special, you got links and everything posted.
How much RAM do you already have? That should be an indicator of whether or not you need more. As for $60 that's not cool. You could probably go to Best Buy and have it done for less. Your install shouldn't cost as much as the memory stick does. And do all that Trotsky311 says there and check out those links. Once you get yourself protected right the number of pop ups should decrease significantly. Your computer should run faster too after that and you may find that more RAM is not as necessary as it may seem.
I like to use Adaware. I found it at download.com. I also use a little program called absolute internet eraser. It also has a popup blocker thats blocks most things, but still allows a new window to open if you need one. cc
The guy said he already owns a memory stick and I can buy it from him and he will install all for one price of $60. Is this stuff free? ad-aware and crap? My pc keeps freezing and it's driving me insane. I don't even have the effort to go to all these links at the moment, but I will get to them. Thanks, man, I appreciate it. We'll see what happens.
yeah man. everyone of those links i put up is free. anymore, boxes running slow is spyware related pretty often. i'd hit up adaware or spybot first.
I was a wandering by, and I can't pass it up... If it's really bad with the pop-ups so that your inet speed is too slow to download... do this: Disable startup items (because spyware/adware/viruses tends to store themselves there) click =-- Start -> Run [type "msconfig" (without the quotations of course )] then do this to it: And then click ok and restart. This is only a temporary fix and you'll have to manually start necessary programs like any anti virus. Good luck, spyware sucks Brett (tech support)
use a browser from mozilla and you'll probably have less pop ups. switch to a macintosh from a pc, and all of your other computing worries will go away as well, forever.
for pop ups I simply installed the yahoo task bar, it stops them all. Sometimes it has to be disabled to open a new window or a game but it only takes one click to turn it on and off.
Another thing too is making sure you have your internet security settings set so that programs aren't allowed to install themselves without you knowing. Edit: I forgot to say that $60 for the memory and install together isn't bad depending on how much RAM he's giving you. Installing it is not hard at all so don't let them tell you otherwise. We could probably walk you through it. So really it comes down to wether or not your getting a good deal on the memory stick itself.
yep. get adaware and run the full system scan. might take a while but go make a cup of tea or something. for pop-ups i use the yahoo toolbar, it does the job and has some handy links and stuff
my sister installed ad aware and it said we have like 5 viruses and some other shit. So, how do I get rid of them. And I still have millions of popups, so I guess that thing just scans and doesn't stop pop ups. What am I to do? I suck with computers, and my sister is just 13 and my parents know absolutly nothing about computers and never use it and seem to care less.
i'm going to have to majorly plug "Mozilla Firefox" right about there. this may come as a suprise, but i actually can't remember when i last had a popup. it's probably been months since i saw one. that and I run spybot and adaware. getting zonealarm is a good idea, but i don't run it anymore, mostly for local networking sharing problems. but i'm behind a hardware firewall, so I don't worry too much. you'll probably benefit if you got ZA.
I like Firefox, but have found its popup stopper to be pretty crap to be honest, not much better than not having one at all.. Anyway, the Google toolbar also contains a popup blocker, buts its not much good either. The best one i have seen so far (and this came as a surprise to me too!) , i.e no popups at all, is the IE one with XP service pack 2.
If you still have popups while running Firefox you have a virus or adware allready on your machine. I havn't seen a popup in years, I don't know why people would bother using IE with all its security holes. As for the original question, I would recomend starting fresh, backup all of your important files and just reformat, and install a fresh copy of XP. More ram can always help though.
hi I am a pro computer tech, stick with the things that trot told you to do, if this does not significantly help your problem then have your bud put in the mem stick. However find out what kind of stick it is. Is it used and make sure that your bud is useing a static strap if you are going to let him/her doink around in your box. If the stick is less then 256mb tell him to stick it up his pobo.you also need to make sure that you computer is not rambus based as many of the demension series were(it requires twin sticks to upgrade)After you get a good spyware sweeper and a.v program on your computer the key is to keep it updated and learn about how and why you are getting all the spyware crap to begin with and learn how to use your internet options in explorer to help you manage some of these issues. One more thing your virtual memory should be set very low adding to it did not help your problems. Buying a Mac or changeing browsers is not needed and can be very costly,if you use the tools that are free and at your disposal things will get better to get you started go to a web site www.pcpitstop.com let scan your computer and use the suggestions that it gives you stay away from the toolbars like google ect as they always run in the background and will cause your computer to become even more slow if you do have mem issues. a great a.v program that is free is called A.V.G. and you can google search to find the free download or go to the downloads section of www.zdnet.com and search for it there . xpsp2 has a great popup blocker if you haven't installed it yet I suggest that you do so. It also sounds like you have a couple of virus and thats why ad aware and the other programs have not been able to totally help you. If you had kazza(not lite version) disable as much of that pos program that you can and I will tell you how to get rid of the rest of it if you are still haveing probs..Hope this helps .....................................neosbro
