Hi, how is everyone doing? This'll be my first post here.

My girlfriend and I just (a half hour ago) had unprotected sex for the first time. She had informed me that because she had just started her period, she could not become pregnant. Upon further research on the Internet, I found this theory to be untrue. So I looked around for possible solutions and the most intriguing was a "morning after pill," which I could obtain at a local Planned Parenthood Center.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they known to be effective? The site I looked at said it would be effective if taken within 120 hours after intercourse, is this true?

Also, does anyone know how much they might cost? I couldn't possibly guess, I could estimate $20 or $200. If it's the latter I guess it'd be more logical to go with a pregnancy test.

Thanks for any responses, much appreciated.

They are usually very effective. Some insurance will cover it, but not most.

i've used the morning after pill three times... i've known them to be quite effective. statistically, they work 99% of the time. for me, they were $20, because i'm an independant student. if you go to planned parenthood and tell them you're in school and working, then that's what the rate will be.

Errr, what? You're comparing apples and galaxies here.

    Apples, are delicious fruit.
A galaxy is a large collection of stars and solar systems in a relatively concentrated area compared to the vast emptiness of space.

A morning after pill will prevent Sperm from fertilizing an egg, prevent a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the uteran wall allowing a fetus to form, and or prevent an egg from being released by the felopian tubes altogether. The morning after pill will prevent a pregnancy from occuring.

A pregnancy test tell you if a pregnancy is currently underway. Two options then remain, you have a baby, or she has an abortion. I assure you both of those options are far more costly than even the most expensive of morning after pills. A pregnancy test will not prevent a pregnancy from occuring. A pregnant reading from a pregnancy test does not tell you whether you should spend the money to get the morning after pill, it tells you when its too late to spend the money to get a morning after pill.

120 hours is incorrect by the way, its 72 hours, each hour passing increasing the chances of it not working. 99.5 percent chance of working within the first 12 hours i do believe, and somewhere around 70 percent chance by the 72 hour mark. any later than that, and it could cause damage to the unborn child if she is infact pregnant, and so you normally will not be allowed to get the pill to prevent that.

if its less than 72 hours, go, go now. RIGHT NOW. If its more than that, pregnancy test it is...

damn people rehashing old threads! oh well, i hope someone else reads this who's too shy to post they're own. I can always cut and paste when a new thread comes along ;)

Go to the clinic and ask them. They will have the most up to date info, because that is their job. Quit wasting time on the internet and go take care of this.

Oh, and QUIT HAVING UNPROTECTED SEX. You have a lot less messy situations like this one.

You could've avoided this whole mess by not having unprotected sex at all. The myth of not being able to get pregnant on your period is just that - a myth. If you're going to be sexually active know the facts so you don't get into this kind of situation again.

Not sure where you got that figure, but it is wrong. EC is about 87% effective if used immediately, and its effectiveness decreases as time passes.

That's not true, either. It can be effective up to about 120 hours after unprotected intercourse.

but if you're against abortion, then you might want to skip the RU-468 (morning after pill). cause it basically is one. so just an ethical thought to throw around.

Well I'm in canada, and luckily here they have youth clinics you can get it for free in - you don't need a prescription, but my doctor gave me one just in case - and its usually free if you go to the right places.

I recently had to get some of this because I only just started the pill and I missed a day a few days before I met up with this guy and the condom broke, so I was like good thing I have this prescription for plan b handy! lol
so like I went and I got it and the guy even let me keep the prescription just in case - like I said, you don;t really need a prescription here. however try to avoid having your gf use it more than once in one menstral period (the time between her ToM) because it can disrupt your reproductive system and she might get a wonky bleeding schedule - in laymans terms :p

They say it makes you nauseas and I have a bad stomach but I was fine - and you're allowed to drink after taking it so really it has no downside, besides nausea, which I didn't even get- but everyones different.

First, I would call a clinic, and explain your situation. Yes, it's possible for her to become pregnant on her period, but it also isn't PROBABLE.

I could go on to explain why, but I haven't the energy to explain the entire menstruation process, and why it isn't LIKELY that she would get pregnant on her period.

But, possible, yes. If you are very worried, get the emergency contraception... find a free clinic.

By the way, the morning after pill is NOT abortion, and do not listen to that. The abortion pill, and the morning after pill are completely different things. The morning after pill prevents a pregnancy from ocurring, it does NOT abort an already established pregnancy.

Don't have unprotected sex, or if you are going to, at least have her get on some decent birth control.

Unprotected sex isn't just dangerous because of pregnancy, but STDs and other bacterias as well (i.e. it is easier for a woman to get a yeast/bladder infection, if condoms are not utilized, because of "outside bacteria") I suggest always using a condom...but if anything, get her on birth control if you think that you may ever decide to have unprotected sex again.

    good luck.

you wouldnt have to worry about the morning after pill if you didnt have unprotected sex, dumb ass....sounds like you need to learn more about sex, before you jump in head first, and the chances of getting pregnant on her period are less then 20 %, i think you will be fine.....

as i have done this thosands of times, and havent become pregnnat...
    good luck
