Hey, y'all are a hoot! I had no idea that my personal choices were such a big deal. I said I didn't notice before because I didn't really think about it that much. Had absolutely nothing to do with any other posters. I have a life besides on the computer.

It is a pity to hear that Shane, because the event that sparked this thread for me was the slaughter at VT.

I think I would find it very difficult to live in a neighbourhood where I needed armed protection, but going back to earthmother's point, we have a choice, and in this case it would be to move to another area. Much like the natives did to get away from their new neighbours.

We've had a heated discussion so far, which as Shane rightly points out, has been used to state everyone's case. Fair enough.

DP won't change, YNB and Shane won't change, and I don't think either I, Ronald, or the late and highly missed Sentient will change.

I think we can all agree to disagree on this matter, but before I depart into the sunset, I want to thank you all, and know that although sometimes we joke around, us Yanks with the Brits, know that you're always welcome on this side of the Atlantic, because at the end of the day we're all human beings, and it's good to be alive.

For now I think it's best for America to keep it's guns, but they should all be phazed out over the next 10 years, and if necessary replaced by other technology which is less lethal.

The thing is that when you post comparing a british person saying the ban on handguns was a disaster it means that murders by guns only went down by about 10% in britain that would mean 5 murders

in the USA that would mean 1,000 thats the difference

but again we play with numbers because the pro gun lobby dont like being reminded what a 1000 people look like so here ya go this is about 300 people so tripple that then add 10% more

Ok so also why isnt the USA more open about its gun use? If you have a problem with gun murder etc why not bring back the shoot-out so people can have a gun duel at 30 paces etc - that way people with a real score to settle can do it that way rather than incriminate themselves - so long as they use a judge appointed by the state to oversee proceedings

Now if DP has access to statistics that are almost impossible to produce under normal circumstances (as Balbus pointed out earlier I think) then that makes his figures all the more veritable.

My theories and ideas on why the US has the gun culture it has, the attitudes it is based on and the reasons why this had a detrimental effect on US society is not even disputed anymore because they have no arguments that can dispute them. So they ignore them (in the same way they ignore their societies problems) and keep repeating the gun lobby line in the hope that no one notices their lack of any real answers.

What is the matter with having the gun? I do not understand your philosophy. If you are responsible with guns and know how to use them with confidence then there will be little deaths. You have to know how to shoot if you want to avoid killing other people. It is bad aim that kills, not the guns or the people. Trust me. I know these things. Where I come from we have regular shootings after football matches and nobody ever gets killed. This is traditional here and a lot of fun.
