Planning on week or so in the middle rhine area to check out the castles and towns. I was wondering on which town is the best to hang out in and stay a few days, maybe something with some fun gasthauses/bars. Koblenz, Boppard, Bacharach or Rudesheim? Which offers the best tours and easier access to the best castles and such. Maybe even a hotel recommendation if possible. Thanks for the help and info. Love traveling to Europe each year and always do the Amsterdam-Germany connection.
    Cheers!

If you visit the District of Hesse, I recommend visiting Fulda, Gersfeld and Poppenhausen. They're all so pretty!

We stayed in Cologne (Rhine) and Whelen (Mosel) on our last visit to Germany (a side trip from our annual pilgrimage to Amsterdam...).

Cologne gave us a taste of the big city, and Whelen a taste of the wine countryside. Lots of places to stay, sight-see, eat and drink. And drink. And drink. Great wine and beer, especially the kolsch beer in Cologne.
