make it yourself! when i started wearing the more hippie clothing etc i also found it was really expensivew so i improvised. i got alot of my old clothes, cut, sewed, bleached and tye died and now my entire wardrobe is crammed with hippie clothes that cost me close to nothing.
Take it from a 60's hippie -- first off, if you think it's the clothes that make you a "hippie" you're never gonna be one. Praying4peace seems to have caught on to the fact that hippie and expensive don't belong in the same sentence. Hooray for your creativity P4P! Granted, if you want something custom made, one of a kind piece with hand embroidery or a style you just can't find anywhere, and you can't sew, you might have to pay a bit for a good handmade piece. But the original hippie style came from mixing and matching hand me downs, thrift store finds, yard sales, army-navy surplus, etc. and modifying them to your own individual taste, or making them yourselves, sometimes not from things normal folks would have considered "clothing" fabrics (like jackets or purses cut from old quilts or rugs, etc) There was a term back in the '6o's for people who spent tons of money to buy fashions which emulated the hippie look but never quite captured it with their designer labels because they couldn't buy the mindset with the wardrobe-- they were PLASTIC. Their personalities and what they bought their clothes with. As I've been reading through the forum today I'm seeing a lot of folks who don't quite get what hippie really was and is. A large part of the hippie lifestyle was creativity, or as they say these days "thinking outside the box".
i don't dress like tye-die and patchwork and stuff.... if you like that kinda thing, that's awesome but to be honest (with my dreads and all) I would look a bit too cliched, so i just wear scabby jeans and bright tops. Although I do really like personalizing my clothes.
I'm sorry if I'm changing the topic a bit but I read an article today about how designers are trying to capture the hippie look once again. It looks a lot like what I've seen in documentaries about hippies and it looks like the only people that have captured that look...somewhat. But as fl60srock said, buying those designer clothes would be plastic. But I just thought it was interesting to see that 60s fashion is coming back but there are people who are always outcasting people who they label as hippies not knowing that we want is the good of the people. Sorry went a little off but I just wanted to throw that out there. Also, now that hippie fashion seems to be coming back might make people think about hippies more in depth and maybe even spark a return. But it might just be wishful thinking.
yeah man i dont buy clothes cos i dont have a job or anythin i get given em by my older cousins so i wear like designer gear and and some hippies think im like a chav or somethin
I buy a lot of stuff at second hand stores, markets and festivals. We have an alternative shop in my home city, but everything is so expensive I only buy stuff there in a sale. I'm thinking of making my own tye-dye dress, but I don't know where to get the paint here.
the fashion industry's been like that for decades, reviving older styles with a new twist. One day it's hippie, the next rockabilly, the third something 18th century or whatnot.
My wardrobe consists almost entirely of band shirts (mostly from my favorite band, Airo, a Native American fusion group), hand-me-downs, and necklaces and wristbands that I've either made or been given. I probably haven't bought anything new for almost two years, shopping for clothes just isn't my thing. I feel bad buying new clothes for myself when so many people in the world can't. I will buy clothes for charity though
^that is how lame teh world is. people suck. hippies are fucking awesome and teh poeple who are themselves and dress their OWN way are the new hippies. we shouold all be hippies if you ask me. and "everyone must get stoned..."
I've been working on a new dress: I got this old old dress from a kind lady down the street but it looked sucky on me, so I resewed it and I'm going to embroid a rainbowcoloured symbol on it. And I bought a secondhand dress I just had to make a bit smaller after that it was perfect.
hippie clothes arent expensive at all, your name says it all, THRIFT STORES! plus gypsy rose is really cool, and my bag is from them, however, i paid 4 dollars for it, tie dying your clothes is so much fun. People dont make fun of my clothes, ive toned it down abit though, I used to dress CRAZY but now im all about the long skirts and buying used clothes and turning them into something cool. I dont give a shit what anyone says about the way i dress, Im the little hippie girl. im used to it, even my husbands like "your such a hippie!" at me sometimes! who cares? The only problem i have is that your more likely to be followed at walmart or hassled if pulled over or walking down the street, like were gonna steal shit! Were about trading and giving!
Hippie clothes or not, the most fun is to make them yourself. Sometimes people stare at me becouse of my clothes. But that's just who I am. I like to make my own clothes. Being hip is to be free and don't give a fuck about what other people think about you. Peace man!
EXACTLY! I change my clothes into something different all the time! When i get bored with a dress, i turns into something else i will wear!
I like the kinda shirts that feel like your wearing almost nothing. really loose fit pants, the fabric isn't too thick. I dont wanna feel it on my neck either. and boxers that are also loose fit, and made of thin fabric. Thats what I like. And headbands, I love headbands and hats. Shirtless is good too. Designer clothes are pathetic, Im not letting someone else design my cloths, specially people who think everyone should look a certain way. My favorite pair of pants is covered in bleach stains (my mom left out a bottle of bleach and my nephew ran around the bonus room sprayign everything) I like them cause they are comfy. My mom doesnt want me to wear 'em anymore.
go to a thrift store 1. old beat up clothes are good hippie clothes 2. why buy new stuff when there is already plenty of good used stuff? this is where i like to buy clothes: http://www.soul-flower.com/
Statements like this sadden me. The idea of 'hippy' is *not* something that should be trendy and expensive to do. You've got it all backwards hun! The original hippies looked the way they do because they were so poor... and refused to buy into corporate society etc. They *had* to sew patches on their jeans because they couldnt afford a new pair, and didnt want holes in their ass. LOL. And tie dying was cheap, they've never have dreamed of buying expensive tie dyed clothing (if shops did them). You need to be creative and frugal to be a true hippy. Otherwise you're missing the point. Peace and hugs
