Robert Johnson

Does anyone here like him? I'm listening to him a lot at the moment, and I think that he deserves a thread on here. I'd say that he's the most influential figure of the early twentieth century, seein as how he has influenced the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Duane Allman, Allen Collins etc. Not to mention just about every blues guitarist ever...

 

I couldn't say enough about him. simply a genius. either that or the devil's experiment

 

great player, and has a haunting voice. His fingerstyle is still mysterious, and he was a blues troubadour. I suspect some of the songs attributed to him were ones he didnt write, but had picked up in his travels and put his own stamp on. Either way, hes a classic!

I fucking LOVE HIM. As far as I'm concerned, rock 'n roll owes its ass to him. There certainly wouldn't have been a Lemon Song...

 

'Travelling Riverside Blues' is my favourite of his.

 

Great song, but I'd have to say Walking Blues is my fave.

 

That's a good one, too. I like 'I Believe I'll Dust My Broom' and 'If I had Possession Over Judgment Day' as well.

I find it really weird that, if he hadn;t been murdered, he could still be alive today, albeit aged ninety-six.

 

Oh damn yes. He was poisoned, correct? All my favorite bluesmen are dead. Elmore died in 63, and Waters in 83? Something like that.
I like Preaching Blues too, and Love In Vain.

 

He was poisoned by a jealous husband (he was a womaniser.) All the old blues guitarists are dead, bar B.B. King. Albert King and Albert Collins died in the early nineties, Freddie King in 1976, Elmore James quite a while back, Muddy Waters too.

Shame.

 

Very sad. I feel like the whole genre is extinct. Janis was phenomenal at singing the blues, but she's obviously dead. =[
I sometimes play "It Hurts Me Too" on my Les Paul but I'm not too good at it -sigh- It came so naturally to people like Elmore James. I wish they weren't dead, but LOL, doesn't everyone?

im from tobacco road in north carolina, small little towns like the ones they came from, so it kind of came naturally to me too, its weird i can play the shit out of the blues, but when it comes to most other types of music im a novice.

I love Robert Johnson! Its sad that so many people don't even know who he was. He definatley deserves way more credit then he gets.

 

I know it was something supernatural with that man and it started the rock god legacy of 27. I hope to die a 27 one day famous that would be the shit.

 

I feel yeah blues comes naturaly too some hard to others I thinks its in the swing feel some tallented musicans can't even fully get into that grove. All I play if pentitoc and minors so all my shits kinda bluesy but im not bad at other geners either, O yeah good tunes keep it alive brother

I hate it when guys like Yngwie Malmsteen try and play the blues. They just don't get it. I love Steve Vai, but his blues stuff is very average. It just comes naturally to some people; Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Robert Johnson, Robert Cray, B.B. King etc. Feel over speed anyday...
