Okay, so basically I have been working at a clothing store in the mall for six months now and it is sucking the creative juices and life out of me. I hate working there but no where in my area is hiring. So my question is this: does anyone have any ideas on ways I could make some money over the summer? I was thinking of selling my artwork for starters...but it's so hard to part with it. Anyways, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
no restaurants in your area? that's where i would start. i'm a people person so i don't mind greeting the folks and seating them. (i'm a hostess)
I'd say that waiting tables is better than a hostess job because ya get tips! my roomie could make almost a grand a week working full time waiting tables. Then again, you could always sell drugs. Shitty tips, though. hahah
Babysit. I would have children so fucked up. Putting flowers in their hair and painting their faces. They would be so cute! Movie Theater? Grocery Store? Got a Whole Foods Market or any fresh food store? What about the head shop. Train to be a body piercer. Live on the Beach? Work at a surf shop! Live in the mountains? Work at a ski shop! Go to work for a flower nurserie. CAN YOU SAY WALMART? If you're 18 (which I see you are 19) try a cell phone company. Like the Verizon store! Librarian? Kennel assistant at the local animal shelter or vet office. Take photos for a newspaper. Freelance them. (talk to drumminmamma) What restaurant did they work at? I never made good tips working at the pizza reastaurant I worked for. That shit sucked!
I wait tables, and i am feeling the same way you are, SunshinePossibility. I'm in a rut..and this job makes me hate people, and i dont want to hate people! you could sell your artwork, but there's a way you can do it and keep your originals - make prints. you could find a shop that could make smaller (like postcard-size) prints, or ever duplicate the same size. Hell, turn them into posters! that way, you could sell them at an affordable price and sell alot of them. Then, if you really wanted to, sell your originals for a couple hundred bucks. I dont know where you live and what the art scene is like there, but find a local art show and get your foot in the door that way. Farmer's Markets are also pretty good places to get your name and your work out there. You probably wont make the money that you would at a conventional job, but you would at least have piece of mind and plenty of time to create your art and do whatever it is you like to do when you want to do it!! (can you tell that ive put alot of thought into this??? im thinking of doing the same thing myself)
Thanks so much for all the ideas! The freelance photography idea really interests me...I'll have to do some more research on it. And I never thought of making prints of my collages. That's a really great idea! Maybe with some yardwork jobs sprinkled throughout and I could be on my way to saving up some money. Aww man, now I'm excited to get to work on these things! (Too bad I have to go to my real job tonight...)
You might check at your local Senior Citizens group (most places have one of some sort, many have funded programs). A lot of older/disabled people need someone who gets around better than they do to run errands, shop, maybe even cook or do light housework.
Go into reiki. Seriously. get a "master" or whatever they call it and you can charge people upwards of 300 bucks to "attune" them. Or just grab a tarot deck, a crystal ball and some fake warts and tell people's fortunes EDIT: supposedly attuning someone probably takes half an hour. So, if you've got a full schedule you can earn ~$600 per hour. Not bad going. Oh, and there's the whole healing people thing, you could do that. But stick with rubing sucker... er, "attuning new reiki masters". Side note: reiki is OK for those that are into that sort of thing. Thankfully, there's lots out there. One born every minute.
Haha if I had a nickle for every lemonade stand attempt throughout my childhood...I'd be a rick woman.
i was makin pretzels at my local autie annes. Its gets pretty boring after awhile but those tasty pretzels are worth all the work.
Hey, I work all the summer in a muesli manufacture. It's boring and people are silly but I earn money and do something else as learning and having parties.
I have always made crafts, and have been looking for markets for them for many years. I finally got something going at the very hip town nearby. I make HATS, and it is a good choice for making something because everyone has a head, and so I make HATS, and sell them and consign them in 6 stores, and get monthly checks that keep a simple lifestyle going quite well. I am very happy to have found something I can make at home, and then have someone else market them for me. It works out just fine.
You could go with manual labor, waitering, or simply working at a book store- or store in the mall. (Just please don't go get a yuppie's sort of job.) It all depends on what you think will be easiest for you. Question what are your talents, and what you are best suited for. (DollyDagger had a good post, try their idea, too.) Personally, I am good at sewing and making jewelry. So I make clothes and jewelry, and sell 'em at stores or boutiques. (Tho' I work at a dojo teaching kids, too.) Good luck! I hope you find what you're looking for~
