how long does a sprout usually take to break through the surface. I planted Friday around noon and today I went and out of 18 only one popped, and it was only like a 1/2 inch above soil. So it has been about 4 days. I ask because I want to make sure that the problem isnt my spots I have chosen, maybe not enough sun, but I beleive the spot with the sprout which popped gets about as much as the others. Maybe its just how deep I put them (around 1/4 inch down) and they are still waiting to emerge. from you experience, about how many days does a sprout take to break the surface (seed was germinated when planteD) and when would you start to worry about it not poppin at all. thanks alot guys. PS - I tried looking it up but couldnt really find anything, just found things on how to care for sprouts, notthing regarding how long they take to pop. thanks
By budblower10: "How long does a sprout usually take to break through the surface?" Anywhere from a day or two, to six monthes or more; there are several variables envolved. "I planted Friday around noon and today I went and out of 18 only one popped, and it was only like a 1/2 inch above soil. So it has been about 4 days." That was just the first one, you should have a dozen, or so, in the next couple of days. "I ask because I want to make sure that the problem isnt my spots I have chosen, maybe not enough sun, but I beleive the spot with the sprout which popped gets about as much as the others." Guessing or assuming how much sunlight will hit any given piece of ground is just that, a guess or an assumptiom. If you had actually dragged your ass out there at various times, throughout the day, to observe what really happens - you wouldn't be wondering now, would you? "About how many days does a sprout take to break the surface (seed was germinated when planteD) and when would you start to worry about it not poppin at all?" You already have "4 days" as a starting point. Most, if not all, of the rest will break through within another 4 days, or so. If a sprout hasn't come up by about 12 days or two weeks - it probably wont make it.
thanks alot TH. I did some scouting but it was hard to get out at all times, and now with the leaves on trees it makes it harder. thanks for the info, ur right maybe the others will come soon, b/c i did the same process for all the seeds, so why would one work and 17 not? ill let ya know what happens? thanks
I think the older the seed the longer it takes to germinate. I found some 1 year old seeds and it took them 2 weeks to germinate. Recent bagseed can germinate wihthin 2 days.
By budblower10: "so why would one work and 17 not?" It's mostly a matter of individual conditions. If all the seeds are from the same mother plant and equaly healthy and planted at exactly the same depth in a very uniform soil with all the same conditions; they sould all sprout at about the same time (maybe plus or minus one day). It might take a sprout an extra day or two just to grow "around" a pebble, besides - sprouts are like people, some are just more vigorous!
