Hippie Documentry On The History Channel

Did anyone see that documentary last night (Sunday, May 13) on the History Channel called "Hippies"? As the name says it is a documentary about hippies.

It was an interesting watch, though I thought it was a bit biased (though not too bad).

Yeah I saw that too, they interviewd a lotta ppl who didn't like hippies and showed'em in bad light. It wasn't too bad, except for the Ronald Regan comment.

 

Damn I really wanna see that- I'm gunna try to find it on my DvR

 

i caught the tail end of it last night....im sure they'll have it on again soon

 

there was also one on PBS called American.....something or other, that was cool but the end was a total drag.

It did seem a little biased, but to be fair they interviewed some former and current hippies, including Wavy Gravy and Mountain Girl, who had positive things to say.

In the end the hippie culture was portraid as a great social experiment which largely failed. However, it also pointed out the changes brought about in modern society by the movement, including their contributions to civil rights, women's rights, the environment and foreign policy. Plus, it emphasized how it has influenced our values as we became the dominant generation.

One thing that bothered me was the show seemed to give the impression that hippies are no longer around at all. Yes most of them left the movement to join the establishment, but many hung on to it. Cutting your hair doesn't necessarily mean you've cut your ties to the past.

I watched it last night too. It was really negative at first and focused a lot on the Manson murders. I liked the end part though. But they acted like hippies don't exist anymore, which was kind of a disapointment.

Just wondering, how many of you have seen Getting High: the history of LSD? That one was great I thought. They dont play that one anymore and now its like replaced with boring and very biased shows about drugs. I could only find it on Youtube and now I can't find it there anymore.

A lot of people like to think the hippie "phenomenon" was a one shot deal which expired. Actually it was just the beginning of a change in human evolution and conciousness. Of course it has its ebs and flows, mostly related to the level of oppression of the dominant culture. Hippie is not about worldly power so you're not going to see a hippie president or hippie CEO of Exxon any time soon but new hippies keep showing up and will do continue to do so because it's all about freedom and connection and the desire for that will never die.

 

WOW, can't wait to watch it.

Did you guys ever watch that movie "The 60's" with that blond hair girl from "Save The Last Dance" where she had the baby and had to live on the streets. That movie was pretty pimp shit! Sad though... I felt bad for her and the baby. But tis just a movie!

I really enjoyed it. It had a lot of vintage footage in it that hasn't been in other 60s counter-culture documentaries, and I absolutely love seeing old footage from that era. Did anyone notice that all of the songs in the soundtrack were not sung by the original artists?

 

I noticed that all the songs were remakes - maybe they couldn't get the rights to the originals?

Did anyone see that special about Hippies on the history channel last night form 12-2 am? It was awful all it did was focus on all the bad parts of the 60's like Charles Mansen. There was like 20 minutes that was alright. They didn't say much at all about how Hippies were fighting for a new and better way.

 

lol thats because the 60's were never the vision you have in your head.. they were attempting to be factual and truthful.
