Theres a pretty easy technique to increase the time you can hold your breath. Breathe deeply for a time, and try to slow down your heart rate.

    Learned that in special forces.

yeah after smoking for a while, i surprisingly have been able to hold my breath really long! i smoked every day for the past couple weeks, and i can hold it like 1:45, when before this "binge" of smoking tons, i could MAYBE hold it for 1:30

I practice everyday when I use the smelly portapoties at work.

I can still hold it for a surprisingly long time... I used to be able to hold it for much longer than a minute as a kid... now that I smoke, I can still probably hold it for over a minute.

I think it differs depending on whether one is holding their breath under water or on land, don't you think? and maybe even elevation factors in, and how high above sea level you are.

The time of day needs to be factored in as well, as you are often tired by the end of the day and still complacent and not at optimium strength first thing in the morning. I wonder if there is a part of the day where one is likely to reach peak performance in regards to holding ones breath.

Distractions might also come into play. Remember that folks. Natural distractions for sure (sun light, strong winds) but also a slap on the back, or someone calling you, may cut your attempt short, even if you don't stop right away.

There are many subconscious factors that may hinder a peak performance. If you feel bad about yourself, or had a bad nights sleep or did not eat enough, you may be cutting at least 5 seconds off your time. One must rest and eat properly before attempting to strive for a personal best. And remember, practice makes perfect!

Remember all this, and you may improve your breath holding ability!

I just got my best time ever: 2:00. I was getting desperate, but I forced myself to hold out to the 2 minute mark. Can anyone beat my time? Honor system.

i probably could beat that...it took me over a minute and a half in the pool to do almost 100 yards - i sprint 100 yds freestyle in around 58 seconds...so if i didn't have to expend energy, i probably would beat 2 minutes easily
