What is a hippie? To me a hippie is person that values love, peace, community, sharing, caring, simplicity, is non-violent and is not into over consumption. A hippie male may or may not have long hair and a beard or the associated apparel. A hippie chick (is that still an acceptable term?) may or may not have beads and long flowing dresses. Hippies may or may not do drugs. What do you think? Symple
I am surprised that this thread has had so little response. Is this question not central to a lot of the posting that goes on? It seems to me that there are a lot of the younger participants that are steeped in the "party" vibe. Sex, drugs and rock'n roll was a part of the hippie movement, but not the only thing. I am fairly new to this site and am not used to navigating around, but where are the threads that question the deeper meaning of things, life, love, politics, relationships, ethics, lifestyle choices, our future etc. Maybe I am just an old curmudgeon.
Hey symple, welcome to the forums http://hipforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47 This link should take you to the philosophy and religion part of the forums. I agree with your definition of a hippie, its always hard describing what one is without stating what one should be, then it wouldnt be very hippie like...
Symple, it is not that we didn't see your post, it has just been asked so many times. What you have discribed sums it up pretty well. What more can we say with out repeting it over and over. It's in our posts, it's in the way we live and love. It's what we do and how we act. Brightest Blessings Symple sh

To Symple:My name is Yogin Bhiarava and this address is a friends as I'm not registered yet. I felt compelled to respond to your statement about "what is a Hippie" after reading yours and many of the other responses to this question. After having evolved to where I now stand as a Tantric yogin as the result of my earlier day LSD exploits, when looking at Hippie through the macro divine lens I would have to say that in all truth, a Hippie is someone who sought and experienced God on LSD. My experiences in the Haight in 66' totally verified me of this. You are absolutely right when you say Hippie was not all about sex and rock and roll. It was the first spiritual renaissance in the western world through the use of LSD. And had we kept this trek to the "Absolute" intact, we wouldn't be suffering at the hands of the "Kali" republicans with a destroyed planet. Namaste. Om Tat SAt, Yogin Bhairava
It's strange to me that when we are on the Otherside in Spirit form we want to be human.. once we get here and see what a mess things are we want to return to Spirit. I believe we each make a tiny change while we are here on Terra Firma adding energy..the thing is, we don't seem to be necessarely concerned where we put that energy..we don't seem to focus the energy we have been given to make change occure, we are scattered and uninvolved and Brotherhood went out the window when $$ signs took over the shining love in peoples eyes. We need to Unite and focus our energies on making changes in the system of things and do it now before it's too late and we kill off our spices.. not just ours but all manner of life. We are killing the planet itself. It doesn't matter if you are hippie, redneck or gangstra.. or what ever your lable is.. everyone is affected. Music is our common meeting ground, we all rally around music. We are all moved by the beat that reaches our souls and we dance. We dance with abandon, for the pure joy and fun of it. It makes us laugh and brings people close together. We Celebrate Life with our song, we sing of our journey and our hopes and fears, we sing of love and we sing out our sorrow, but sing we do and it makes us feel fine. People need to be part of the Vibration, the Frequency that we buzz on. To connect with eachother like we use to. I'm going to a place that is just that, a reconnection with what we have been missing in this world, a common ground for all to relate to.. music is that connection. Music is what unites us. Goodstock2007 Music Festival is when I will take my stand and unite with my brothers and sisters to Show The Love.. I would like to see all of you there, spreading the love around..they have shut down Woodstock Reunions at Yasgurs and the other festies are too commercialized and has been rolled in Corporate BS over n over till they stink of ink and blind the eyes with propaganda. That is what called me to give my energies to GS bc I believe it can make a difference in the lives of the ones who attend, even make changes in hearts and minds of men if we pull enough energy together. Look at the energy Woodstock had, look at how people changed a little after that.. more love was poured out from the universe down onto us below.. we released so much love and brotherhood at Woodstock it reached a frequency that changed the vibrational flow from negitive to positive. It time for a tuneup folks..(heh heh on the pun 'tune up') Brightest Blessings sh
hello everyone, i consider myself a young hippie chick and yes i think that term is still allowed. your description of a hippie is beautiful. i value the love, the sunshine, the many wonderful people and all that has been given to me in life. i was kind of hurt when you talked of all the kids in the rock n' roll and sex...i for one, am a young kid. and my life does not consist of only drugs sex and rock n roll; although this world is turning left and right! the kids nowadays listen to rap and use drugs over the limit. in my school i see so many young kids talking of violence and drugs and crime and loud "bad" music (literally bad...) where is the love?! they talk back to teachers and cuss consistently. like what the hell guys? anyways. don't get me wrong; i love my drugs; i love my loud rock n roll....as for sex (private) but hey! that's not what my life is all about!!!! peace guys!
. If that love includes justice---yes. If non-violence is not so extreme to allow oneself to be raped or attacked. As a self-defense practioning woman, and zen buddhist there is a point where one must defend oneself. I live and worked in Brooklyn. NYC has had plenty of violence. Otherwise I really dislike those who view violence as entertaining, who bully or intimidate.Conspicous consumption is shit headed and pathetic. I agree with most of your definition though. I think that to criticize those who believe pot is a panacea, don't make me less hippie. I'm talking about overconsumption. Left -wing politics ---humm another category that includes: Stalinist, thrill seeking violent anarchists. Todays left is actually narrow-minded in many cases and includes some racists! . All terms to categorize people are somehow fuzzy I'm cautious of the maya of noma!
Hi Nylotus Very good post. I agree that real self defense is sometimes necessary. Even war, like in the case of the Second World War, not the Iraq war. On the personal level also I believe that using violence as a last resort for a real and immediate threat is moral. I do have a soft spot in my theoretical mind for one who turns the other cheek and forgives them that trespass against them even while the trespass is taking place. But all of this is a thorny issue. Preventative justice? Pot as a panacea is ridiculous. I hate the term Left Wing. I mistakenly use it instead of what I really mean which is the politics of peace, environment and social justice.
I think that it is rediculous to target "what is a hippy" Most people around consider themselves to be hippies cause they smoke some weed and experiment with shit, I think that everybody has forgotten what its all about. TRENDS, all the 60's movement was, was a big trend. Half of these summer of love children turned into corporate buisness men and wemon, totally ignoring what they "stood for" back in the 60's. All those so called hippies from the 60's were all just sheep. And nothing has changed All i see is a group of sell outs giving their souls to what the world has viewed as being a Hippy. People tring to fit in the hippie image asking questions like, how do i act more like a hippy? I allready own all the doors albums does this make me a hippie? Jim wasnt a hippie he was a escape artist in his own way that millions "hippie" sheep followed in the wrong direction. If you need to ask what makes a hippie you probably need to sit down and think of what you are and what you stand for. do you buy into music that is all show and no substance? Do you buy music because it was the cool thing to do back then or even now? Do you talk on the internet about what hippies are and what love stands for? If you answered any of those questions with a yes then you aint no hippie. I sure as hell am not, neither is anybody on this board.
One of my old spiritual books stated "God is happiest when he sees us dancing." I can dig that, because when we are moving to the beat of the music we are (IMHO) expressing the spirit of god within us. Dancing with abandon is pure freedom, pure joy. It's one of the best feelings in the world, to dance.
