I remember reading this before in an internet article and it really weirded me out. Apparently at the turn of the 20th century, in a suburb outside of Boston (may have been New Hampshire though) a floating blob, thirty feet or more in length, floated over a small town and was spotted by approximately a hundred people. I remember reading that it had a nose like appendage that sniffed them, or somehow moved in a way that caused those who saw it to think it was smelling them.

I don't remember the color or any more details as to it's shape, but it was seen in clear daylight floating around over town by many people, and an article was written about it in the newspaper.

Does anyone have any more information on this oddity? I immediately suspected, when I read this, of some lifeform from another dimension, as it does not sound like anything that would plausibly fit into any known ecosystem in this one.

Anyway, really interesting account I think. I love the stuff that's so out there that you almost have to believe it (especially considering the time frame, and how important a reputation was at the time and how damaging to said reputation it was to tell zany stories, as well as the sheer number of people involved seeing the organism).

THE GREAT BOSTON MOLASSES FLOOD OF 1919

If you had to choose how to die, drowning in molasses would probably not rank high on your list. On Jan. 15, 1919, 21 people, a dozen horses and at least one cat had no choice. A 58-foot-high, 90-foot-wide cast-iron tank holding 2.2 million gallons of molasses burst, sending a tsunami of the viscous liquid down Commercial at 35 m.p.h., destroying houses, commercial buildings and a part of the elevated railroad.

I'm not certain but this might be what you're looking for :H

No but that is one interesting story! Imagine being swept away by molasses. Jeez!

The blob in this story was alive and floated very slowly through the air.

Well It's certainly closer to the mark than a tidal wave of molasses [IMG]

In 1935 five people claimed to have seen a mysterious "orb" rolling through the small fishing village of Chatham, Massachusetts on the elbow of Cape Cod.

Two months later all five witnesses vanished on the same night -- never to be seen again.

I believe you are referring to "the orb of Chatham."

That guy has a book about it apparently. I'd like to read it, looks like a very interesting story.

On a late summer night in 1935, five residents of Chatham, Massachusetts, witnesses a large mysterious "orb" moving through the small fishing village on the elbow of Cape Cod. Phone service was uncommon in isolated areas at the time, so the witnesses filed their reports after daylight. Local authorities immediately dismissed them as a hoax. The witnesses' independent accounts were virtually identical; the orb appeared to be made of blackened metal, it was perhaps six feet tall, and it traveled in absolute silence by rolling or floating. One witness reported spotting the orb "hovering" in the air above a local church. Two months later, all five witnesses vanished - on the same October evening - never to be seen again.

I think I'm going to look for that book tomorrow. I checked out the website, and yeah, it looks like a very interesting read. Plus, the website is a companion to the book and I guess you use both to solve the mystery (or to find out what likely happened).

No, it wasn't the orb of Chatham, which sounds like an awesome book but is not based on a true occurrence from my understanding. Wish I could find the source, it was the most "out there" thing I've ever read.

Is it possible you're confusing two seperate events :H

In my neck of the woods (back in the fall of 1965) there were several reports of a large white saucer shaped object floating over Exeter, New Hampshire.

The sighting of this massive white object was also seen by two police officers on patrol [IMG]

Sounds like one of the stories famed New England writer Edward Rowe Snow would be very acquainted with.

People don't go on this section often enough. It's incredibly interesting. But I think this is the most out there thing I've heard in ages that didn't come from the mouth of some 4 year old making up stories to get attention. Someone post info.
