i had this magazine once that taught you how to make wash out dreads. i had dreads once for only 4 days and it took me almost 3 hours to comb them out! i'm trying to grow my hair out right now, so i dont want to damage it too much, but i really want dreads. does anybody know how to do wash-out or comb-out (that doesnt rip your hair out) dreads?

if you put them in right they don't come out and in any case if you dread up your hair at all and try to comb it out its gonna break and shred your hair----

    uh-huh, dreads are a commitment.
Unless you get a wig, or extensions or something.
I heard of some people getting only one or two dreads and that seemed to work out pretty well, as they didn't get in the way alot.

my friend had an article on "temporary dreads" from seventeen or YM or one of those. It just basically said to seperate hair into sections, use a lot of wax and roll the hair between your hands till they stick together.

Doesnt sound like they'd look like dreads... actually it sounds really F-ing nasty looking. Its going to be goopy and gross.

if you want to know how to make real dreads go to http://www.knottylocks.tk this i a message board full of dreadsters. they will tell you the no-gos (like ANY form of wax) and the yes-yes's (tea-tree!!) als ohow to do it.

I did mine by seperating and backcombing once then leaving them to sort themselfs out for a few months.. not i play about with them a lot, they are 7 months old and are finally beiging to feel like real dreads.
Its a slow process... but like was said befroe dreads are a commitment, not like other hairstyles. Dreads are a life style not a hair style :p :p hehe

I think that they make a product that gives you temporary dreads that just washes out, but after two or three days if you don't wash it out then it becomes permanent.

Can you wash your dreads so they dont smell like ass? Not take them out just shampoo, so they feel clean.

Of course you can! The whole idea that dreads are dirty is a horrible myth that unfortunately is very widespread. You wash with soaps and shampoos that do not contain frangrance and color which can get left behind and build up and thats whats nasty. Unless you are sweating and dirty alot you would generally wash less and it trains your hair to produce less oil but sweating and dirty should come on out in my opinion. With new dreads, having it clean is better for tightening and locking up.

yea as sprout said if you wash them it helps them lock. grease and sweat make the knotts slip out, the cleaner your hair is the better it dreads, however dont condition it (obviously) because conditionaer is just a chemical replacement for the natural oils and greese that shampoo takes out.

Just use a shampoo without checmical preservatives in it because they cling to the hair and go mouldy. I use a soap from Lush a natural soap company. i use Juniper soap.

i used to use Dr. Bronners. Its hemp based soap, comes in bar and liquid (i used bar on my head and liquid on my body) it seemed to work fine for me. Some sites such as www.dreadheadhq.com and www.knottyboy.com have shampoos you can use as well as tips.

But even wtih those YM fake dreads if you leave them in for too long i think theyll stick.

the problem is with sites like knottyboy all they are trying to do is sell their products, and their products arent exactly perfect for dreads because they contain chemicals and to be hones any wax (even knottyboy way) is going to be bad for dreads because it stunts the knottig process, just makes it look knotted.

you can do temporary dreads by taking sections of hair, spraying them with hairspray, then using a straightener on them. they dont look too much like dreads..but I did it just to see how my hair would look sectioned off
