i recently started at a new job, with my best friend. she and i have kind of a shoplifting history...we got arrested for it our junior year, and ever since then i've not really done it (i used to take really small shit from my old work, like nail files or a candle---i know, still not right). so she and i have this new job now...it's incredible. the people are awesome, the environment is awesome...above all, the pay is awesome. my financial situation has been made so much better by this job, and i don't ever want to loose it. so this friend of mine, even after being arrested, still likes to steal a lot...but only at places we've worked at. the last job i didn't care much about...but now she's starting to steal from this new place...and i'm getting worried. the owners are such good people, they're very generous and always give back to the community...and i have a feeling they'd have absolutely no tolerance for employees stealing from them, which is obviously very reasonable. i love working with my friend, and i'd never want to do anything to hurt her or get her in any sort of trouble...but at the same time, i have to watch my own ass too. i don't want to get her fired, but if she steals and someone notices, they could very possibly think we're in it together. i'm real torn and confused...i'd hate to be such a bad friend...but this job is so perfect and i don't want to take any chances, either. help!!!
have you tried to explain this to her. It seems especially lame to steal from a small business like that, they may be just surviving as it is.
You should talk to your friend. Tell her how you feel, that it's wrong, and that you don't want to go down with her if she gets caught. Hopefully she'll respect your wishes and stop. If not, it's up to you whether or not you want to say anything. Know, though, that if you rat her out, you probably lose a friend. I would think that even if your friend does get caught, your boss won't automatically assume you 2 are in it together...and they would at least talk to you about it first, not just fire you.
yea, i never even thought of talking to her about it...great idea, i should have thought of that. i know the owners wouldn't automatically assume it was both of us...but my friend is planning on taking things when just the two of us start closing together, which is relatively soon. if someone notices and it gets tracked back to that night, people might think that she and i were both doing it, since we were alone in the store, and we're good friends. but then again you're right, they'd most definitely talk to us about it before doing any firings. thanks guys, as always, much help
