    You know, beards and stuff.

This thread is aimed at the hippies on hip forums who had a beard during the 60s. Modern day hippies are also welcome to chime in but I am more interested in the old school perspective on this one.

What I wanna know is: did you keep them in the summer? or were they too hot? Did you find that getting food in your beard was a problem? Or did you even care?

Feel free to add any useful info or humorous anecdotes :p

I am currently growing mine and I like having one but I find myself wondering wether I should just chop it off as it does have its problems now and then.

I know this all sounds kinda dumb but it's just good to hear your opinions.

I trim mine in the summer. By the end of winter it's usually down to my chest and yes it's a bit cooler when it's shorter. Getting food in the beard isn't really a problem. Sure if it's long food debris will land there, just brush it out. Keeping your beard free of food is a lot easier than shaving.

I think men look like little adolescent boys when they shave. It makes me want to laugh. What is scraping the hair off your face all about anyway.? It grows there, and looks better than stubble. Most men have weird angles to their faces, and would be greatly enhanced with something more soft and round and fuzzy, to take the edge off.

About food in your beard ? If you slow down and take small bites, there shouldn't be any problem with food, most people eat too fast and don't pay attention to what they are doing.. I can't believe that shaving would be cooler in summer, certainly not too much to bare compared to bristle, and cuts, and a sore abrasive face. (OUCH) Come on hippies, shaving is so mainstream, and so square. I usually imagine a beard on every man I see without one, and he always looks better in my imagination.

I keep mine relatively short most of the time, since the girlfriend prefers it that way...i also find it gets a bit itchy when its too long..
with my beard, its insanely curly, so even if it looks short, there's hairs in there that are 3 inches long, and they get tangled together...therefore, i keep it short..

i don't find that food gets in it a whole lot...well, sometimes, but you just brush it off...however, if i'm sweating, i'll feel it in the beard a lot more...again...just wash your face and the problem is solved..

Another wonderful use for the beard is when i don't have anything to put my incense sticks in, and my hands are full, i can put it in my beard...when i take it out, it smells nice...if you try this, don't let it burn close to you at all...

    I wish I had a beard.

    That would kick ass!

Especially because I'm physically incapable of growing one.

Yep, thats me in the band...playing guitar...
It was a sort of jamband thing...jazz, rock, blues, with cool grooves and spacey improvisations...the upright bass was a really nice sound for the group.
it was a lot of fun, but we broke up after that gig...the drummer was psycho and no longer speaks to either of us..the bassist and i still play together sometimes, but now he's gotten accepted to Berklee, so he's gonna be gone in September
Now my new group has a new drummer, and electric bassist..a different sound, but a new way to play my psychedelic music

I understand what An Untitled Protest is saying. Other people view us differently with a beard. "That is what we want, right" is what you might be thinking. Yes, I did want to be seen as "different" when I grew my beard. I wanted to be seen as different from the materialistic culture that we live in. Well, I had a beard, a short one compared to natural long ones, and I kept it for seven months. Recently, I had to attend a wedding, and as spring had just sprung on to us, I decided to shave. Unfortunately, women view me differently. Now, they give me looks, and don't act uncomfortable around me. Now, when growing the beard, these are all mostly materialistic women that I didn't want anyway, but feeling "desirable" feels good to me. So, I'm stuck. I have a wedding to serve in on this June 9th. After that, I'm not shaving, and I plan to attend the National Gathering.

Anyway, so I'd like to be natural, in hopes of finding a natural woman. Like attracts like, or so the universal law states. Also, I wanted to portray outwardly who I am inwardly. Inside, who I really am is a rebel, and a natural person. Outside, is fierce world where people prefer me to dress nice, and shave.

It pisses me off, because I am attractive guy that is single, and I can attract more women while I'm shaved. This brings up a good point though, I shouldn't want more women, just the right woman. Dammit, I'm just a whus now....... i need to quit thinking, and grow my beard back. I'm letting my hair grow out also.

You did ask for old school, but I just wanted to share my experience anyway. Who am I really? Just an ex cowboy turned environmentalist, organic, all natural, back to the land seeker.........that is fed up with this culture.

Beards are actually quite dangerous. I would not grow one if I were you. They tend to attract small rodents looking for nesting material and while they are there they throw candy wrappers around, watch old Chip and Dale movies and then fall asleep, sometimes pooing where they lay.

There are many natural women who love to see men with facial hair. You really don't want those women who only are attracted to men who shave. I would hope you could just be yourself and let it all hang out. It may be important for you to be attractive, but really, what good does it do to attract a conformist woman who just wants a conformist man.

I actually think some woman find men with facial hair too animal like and sexy, and they just can't relax around them as much. They want their men looking like little adolescent boys, properly confined in a suit and tie.. The woman who is only attracted to the shaved face may just be wishing to keep her own desires suppressed , and she feels more comfortable around a man who looks more cut back and less sexually animal-like. I prefer the untamed beast look (LOL), rather than the scrubbed and polished and scraped style. I hope you find some resolve. Keep up with the Raw and Natural.

Let's see... had a moustache only for about 5 years, a trimmed beard/goatee with moustache for about 20 years and was cleanshaven for about 10 years...grew back a very short goatee only (no moustache) for a couple of months and am now clean shaven again. At no time did I have a large Grizzly Adams full beard.. As usual being a hippie (at least for me) doesn't mean conformity ... even to "classical hippie standards" .. it's about individual choices, variety and personal creativity!

My wife actually prefers me with either the goatee only (no moustache) or the cleanshaven look.

I know I'm just a young pup but I love to just let my facial hair just grow. Cruently I have a goatee and scruff, and it fealls great. Though my parents hate it when I let it grow beacause I still cant grow a full beard, but the goat is nice. The girls I date don't seem to care, and actualy like my facial hair, go figure right?

Anyway enough of me taking up space.... Off to EXAMS!!!
