We are from two different schools of thought as regards to gun-ownership, DP, but what you said, and scratch, too, has made me think that something needs to be done.

There have been many noble and noteworthy Americans, and probably my favourite is Martin Luther King.

When he faced opposition against all odds, he refused to accept racism and stood with his people for their rights. And the good people of the USA, those who were able to see and listen, and understand that there was a problem stood with him.

Are we facing impossible tasks? Maybe we are.

But like Martin Luther King, we have hope, we have a dream, and as decent human beings, it is up to us to make that dream a reality.

 

More often than not the feds who would love to enforce these types of expansive gun laws are the "bad guys". Im sorry that you dont have any more insight into the phenomenon of oppression carried out by the federal government here in the United States but those who advocate the 2nd Amendment know good and well just why Jefferson wanted it enshrined in our Constitution and it wasn't for "sporting" purposes.

 

Oh they're just jealous because we could overthrow our government by force if we really, really wanted to but they think that's far to francophilic. And they have some posh, dried up, old queen in a palace somelace who makes them oh, so superior.

In the uk there were There were 50 shooting victims in 2005/06 compared to 75 in 2004/05.
The USA therefore has a murder by gun rate that is 200 times higher in a population only 5 times higher

It isnt a case that the number of murders dramatically increased - several serial killers, one of which murdered 172 victims was caught and he murdered them with a syringe

You really need to let go of that hate and get a sense of humor. This thread ceased being a political discourse several pages ago when these nice people reduced themselves to name calling and homophobia. And now that you would rather propagate stereotypes, quote statistics about which I don't really care, and call names like a selfish child, it can stay below the threshold of taste and proper debate.

We all agree that guns are bad but some prefer to insult rather than discuss solutions. This thread should be closed.

 

Don't give up Zoomie. I think Sentient has been frustrated by the way this thread degenerated for a while just as much as you and everyone else. I believe I took a bit of a bashing myself earlier on, and was called a communist nazi at one stage! If such thing exists! I didn't complain about it to anyone though.

OK Let's say we get the name calling out of the way, and see if we can concentrate on some solid ideas.

I think that we can more or less agree that banning firearms overnight isn't going to be practical just yet, so let's formulate a few ideas that might help reduce gun crime, which if proven to be effective, could lead to the road where you may still keep your precious guns.

Now, obviously if we're going to have a brainstorm session, we are going to get loads of ideas.

Some of them might seem silly, and you will be tempted to ridicule them.

Bear in mind, however, that if you "do" ridicule them then you will only be doing exactly what other people have been accused of doing, i.e. taking the piss.

So here's Idea number 1, just a little something I thought to start the debate down its proper path again:

How about the politicians who are elected in the White House to represent the people of their state, spend a little time in the most deprived areas of their state. By that, I mean say two or three weeks living in a home in the roughest part of the electorate they represent.

Why?

Because they are politicians. They have responsibility. They owe legience to the people they represent. And if they actually lived in the most deprived areas, not just visited for the cameras, we might just start seeing a bit of fair representation, and a little more schooling, and a little more care in the community, and some respect for the deprived.

And before anyone starts saying, "What about Europe?"

I would "especially" like to see my idea implemented in Europe.

You want to be a politician? You want to be a big shot driven around in a limo? Fine. But you'll have to spend three weeks in Harlem or the Bronx each year nd mix with the people who elected your ass in the office.

Then you'll see a change in gun law! Ha ha!

 

You know I may have taken a few well-placed jabs at the UK and the crown (and all in fun) but I'm in agreement with you folks across the pond; we can do without the guns. I just don't see theneed to come into this thread and be rude and insulting. It has already been stated that the British have moved past national pride and evolved into a new sensibility. I only wish my own country could see that as the path. But there are too many flag-wavers here.

well lets see now, in the usa last year there were 50,000 murders that is 1 in every 600 of the population dead - of those 10,000 were gun murders

so in the uk we had 1000 murders of which 50 were gun murders

200 times the gun murder rate and 50 times the general murder rate in a population only 5 times bigger - all the murders in britain will take 50 years to equal 1 year of murders in the usa - for gun crime we would have to wait 200 years to get the same murder rate.

Its safer for your soldiers in iraq than on the streets of the USA for civillians

the point being that you, Dirk Pitt, are not in the slightest bit interested in saving lives, you are interested in you, your self interest, your selfish right to own weapons regardless of their impact on society. Thats what you believe in !

Dirk, I think I've already stated that you can't just unilaterally ban guns in the US. It would cause a violent upheaval. We need to get illegal firearms off the streets and out of the hands of street gangs and nutjobs. Then we can work out a compromise between the NRA fanatics and the rabid anti-gun faction.

I don't have the answer, but a ban on firearms is not the solution to maintaining a peaceful society here. Obviously neither does anyone else posting here. And that post was not aimed at you, it was aimed at the American-hating wanker who thinks all of the US is the O.K. Corral. People who get all their information from Hollywood and MSNBC really need to shut up.

 

You're right to point out that there is no simple correlation between the number of guns and the number of murders, though seeking such a correlation is to miss the point.

There is a correlation between the type of weapon used and the likelihood of fatality. I quoted a study earlier in this thread which demonstrated that with-gun robberies were about 3 times more likely to end in a death than robberies with knives. The difference should be fairly obvious - it doesn't take much skill or courage to use a gun when compared to other weapons, they can be used from a distance almost without risk and without physical contact, there's no need for "blood on your hands". Guns are a huge psychological enabler for violence and we see this reflected in the numbers of gun murders compared to those committed with other weapons.

So where you have a culture of violent crime and a high availability of guns, you have a higher murder rate. QED.
