I think grunge was more about stating your opinion than having badass guitar solos. And just look at the vocalists of bands such as Soundgarden and Pearl Jam......I would kill to have Chris' or Eddy's voice. Don't put down an era because of music. I bet back in the seventies Zeppelin was to the teens then as something like My Chemical Romance is to the teens now. And......how come no one has mentioned the butthole surfers?
I liked the music from that time. Bands like Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and my fav band Nirvana. But like any other time period in rock history, it's over, but most of the music is still around to listen to. The bands or the "grunge" movement might be over, but you can still get out your old albums out, crank the knob to ten and rock out. So I can't really miss music that I can still listen to. I don't just like grunge from the 90's though. After grunge there were tons of bands that came out that kicked ass and they're still kicking ass today.
Guuuh, no about missing it, I hate grunge. Alice In Chains, big thumbs up. Everything else I've ever heard in the genre, ugh.
I don't miss anything from the 90's except my childhood. Nirvana and the like are not my cup of tea. Are you sure about that? They are much too talented to be compared to the garbage spewed out of My Chemical Romance. Sure, there were a lot of people who did not care for them, but do you really think they were disrespected as much as My Chemical Romance? I would hope not.
No i didn't mean it as in style. I meant that it's "cool" to not like "mainstream." It was just a poor attempt to try and prove a point that judging an era is stupid.
Well, it's true; grunge guitarists weren't that skilled. But if you compare lyrics to hair bands and glam bands, grunge is infinitely better. Though, as to the hand drum solo reference to Led Zepellin, hair and grunge cower in comparison.
] There are plenty of guitar solos in grunge. Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains did AMAZING solo's in songs like Godsmack, Would, and Them Bones. Kurt Cobain was amazing at shredding with songs like Negative Creep and his solo's in songs like Scentless Apprentice sounded amazing when he played with feedback. Mad Season is another great band with awesome guitar playing in it. And they sounded amazing but simple. Grunge and a genre from its origin, punk, showed that you don't have to play guitar like Yngwie Malmsteen just to be in a band. It doesn't matter how many notes you can strike per minute. If you can play pretty decent riff and have lyrics with a meaning and you have fun at what you do then thats all that matters.
All rock, no roll. Spot on. Would it kill a band to know who Chuck Berry is or have even a slight sense of humor? I LUV rock-n-roll, rock is just ok.
Old post but.. So you waited and watched commercially accepted bands get older instead of checking out new bands in the local scenes, bands without big names who never made it to a big RC and then decided to shit on the 90's. Holding the opinion you do makes that quite clear.
Even though I'm not really old enough to miss much from the 90s, I wish there wasn't so little shoegaze around.
I was a "grunge kid"....flannels, dr. martins, the works. I dont miss the 90s....they were great up until Kurt died, then it all went to shit (IMO). Despite what others have said here, I think that grunge was the last good movement of rock and roll. It was the last time I remember being excited for a new album to come out, and new songs sounded great.
not one bit do i miss grunge, or the 90's. i used to love grunge HARDCORE, and i still enjoy the music, but...there's so much more out there. it's the same way i look at the 60's and the music of that era. yeah, to be IN that time during all that would've been ace, but now we have the music of that time PLUS all the music from now that is equally as awesome. theoretically, we have it better than they, because we have what they had plus more...
I agree 100%. There is so much more out there, there even was more out there in the nineties. The 90's went to shit after Cobain and grunge died? It almost hurt me that you think about it like that, Dolly... Ah well, music tastes differ, so maybe you just don't dig the other (in every aspect even more a rock 'n roll movement) kinds of rock coming up in the nineties. Like I couldn't really emerge myself in the grunge music. I also missed the heavy psych and stoner rock scene in the nineties though haha, found it at the end of the decade. And since I used to think a bit like you, that good music had gone and the like, my heart was filled with joy.
Not just grunge, but every aspect of the indie scene in the 90's was great. But god those grunge bands we'll never forget, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Hole, STP, Screaming Trees, L7, Green River, Babes in Toyland, Bikini Kill, Pearl Jam, break out the flannel and the apathy. And let's not forget the great ones outside of grunge: My Bloody Valentine Mazzy Star Sonic Youth/Violent Femmes/Pixies (80's bands technically, but I think the 90's scene really cemented them into history, especially since Sonic Youth is still putting out great albums) Garbage The Breeders Blur Radiohead The Cranberries Sublime Beck Ride Fiona Apple Offspring Tool
I guess I just haven't heard anything that has really resonated with me in a while....my apologies...I should have worded better. Not saying that all music went to shit after Kurt died....just my kind of music, I guess!!! (I think Im an old person trapped in a 28 year olds body.......:H ) I always loved music from the 50s 60s and 70s, but in the late 90s is when I started really getting into music from the 60s/70s and I just kept going from there.....I kinda am not really interested in new music....there's just something that I feel is missing....ASmodean, you are one of great musical knowledge,(and we seem to have the same taste in music) I would definately check out anything that you may reccomend!
I'm 49 ansd I miss grunge and the 90s too!!!!!!!! Can't say I miss thde SHITTY 80's though.........90s killed the 80s crap!
