So I've been hard at work the last week:hyper: designing and cutting patches. Unfortunately, all the patch cutting has left my hands a mess. My fingers are blistered from the scissors, and my hands ache. Sooo... My question is: which do you use to cut fabric? I've seen the rotary cutters at various craft stores (y'know, the ones that look like a pizza cutter?) but I've never used one. However, the handle definitely looks more comfortable that regular scissors. So, which do you prefer? If you use the rotary cutter, any peeves about it? Any fabrics that it doesn't work especially well on? Any thoughts will be very much appreciated. My hands thank you!!! :hurray:
Well, the rotary cutter is useful, but I don't use it much. I think it would be most useful for cutting patches. It's not really for anything that isn't a stright line.
A rotary cutter is best for cutting straight lines. You use a cutter and a plastic quilting ruler as a guide. I couldn't ever cut patches straight with scissors even if I drew lines on the fabric.
A rotary cutter is a must if you want perfect squares. Besides the cutter, and the thick plastic ruler you will also need one of those cutting mats. If you cut on anything else it will wear down your blades. Blades are not cheap. They should be all in the same spot in the store. If you go to Joann Fabrics use your coupon on the mat. I recommend the Olfa rotary cutter. A cutter works great on everything even thick cord.
i love a rotary cutter. even though i don't do patch. it just cut the fabric so perfectly especially the slippery one. when i have to cut the curve i just do it slow and it work fine for me.
