this isn't something i need to or probably even should be thinking about yet, but it will rpovide a much-need distraction from the stressful problems of actuallt getting there.

say you're moving across the state, on your own, with 2 children. you'll probably be in a very small 2 bedroom or large one bedroom apartment. say you can take only one carload of stuff with you. maybe you can get some furniture when you arrive, but funds will be very, very limited.

how will you furnish/decorate the place?

i was thinking about skipping livingroom furniture altogether except for the coffee table and bookcases. instead, piles of rugs and floor pillows, beaded curtains, tapestries hanging on the walls or in windows...i've just always wanted to do that. and to clean, all i have to do is pile everything up & vacuum, slip the pillows out of thier cases (probably made from more indian tapestries) & toss the cases in the wash.

i had a dream in which the aparment i found had a non-working fireplace, and i created a whimsical story area around it by placing a low kid-size bookshelf iin the fireplace, and making a bench, stool & little table out of logs. that would be cool, but not very probable.

    hey there,

sounds like you have some ideas. i'm not so creative. but i actually came across this awesome organization. it's called freecycle. and people post items they don't want anymore for free. they have boards for alot of the areas across the country so you could get some furniture thru there if you keep your eyes open. but i too wanted a room that was like entirely pillows, i thought that would be cool. with tapestries on the walls. and of course for the bedroom you can just have the beds on the floor, i had mine like that i loved it. also just drive around people throw out the craziest things. can i ask where you'll be moving to?

have an idea, but it's not certain & i'm not telling cause i don't want to jinx it. beds on the floor would work if i could only afford the 1 bedroom & ended up doing the "family bed" thing - the toddler can't fall off the floor! but it may be cold in the winter - i tried that once, & it was freezing in january.

tell me more about this freecycle place - i've got a lot of stuff i want to get rid of. can i post a husband there, or do they mean furniture only? :p

wow sounds like you're in much the same situation that my mom is in, only my mom doesn't sound as creative and optimistic as you. I never even thought of ways like that to help her out. I'm a part of the freecycle thing, too. go to www.freecycle.com
