I've had this problem several times...and would like some advice. Often times the germinating seeds pop open just a little...so that you can see the white tap root barely...but then stay that way for too long. When I've tried to go ahead and plant them in the little humus pots (the ones that swell up) they just sit there and mostly rot. The seeds are on a special sponge, dark, good moisture, and covered very lightly with a heavy duty paper towel. (These are better than regular since they don't collapse around the seeds so easily when wet). I presume the environment is right since several seeds jumped right out of the gun! But these others from different source seem to be just sitting there. Any advice welcome.... TKS
I have seen this myself. Either older seeds or temps that were in the upper 60's F. Rockwool cubes are what I would use for the tough ones, A little less chance of rot.
i don't get why peeps germ seeds......they do sprout if ya just throw em in dirt and give em heat and humidity.
Thanks folks... Say BBill, If I use the rockwool can I just place the seed in the wool and water without waiting to see which way the tap root is coming out? The temps are good; high 70's and a seed mat underneath with a separator to keep the temp reasonable. Plenty of humidity, dark, etc. One popped this morning...there's hope yet! TKS
Although i've never used rockwool............im about 95% sure you can just put em in the rockwool and water em. Sounds like you got your evironment in check so they should sprout right up.
Alright that last question got me wondering so i had to go to the handy "Bible" to see what Jorge says: "One of the problems with rockwool can be that the seeds heave out before germinating. This is why it is best to germinate seeds before putting them into the rockwool substrate." meaning they push themselves out of the top of the rockwool before the taproot has a good chance to establish itself. I guess you could try and plant them a tad bit deeper, but it sounds like it would be best to germinate them before putting them in the rockwool.
Yep, you can pop them in "pointy side down" just after the seeds pop. You can germ them directly but as my man said put them a lil deeper. Just be sure to soak the cubes first and gently squeeze out a lil of the extra water. Moist not soaked.
Here's a laugh folks. Had one seed go "ballistic" overnight. Darn thing was sitting amongst all the others...not a crack in any of this strain...and this morning the thing had completely hopped out of the seed and was a half inch long!! The shell was just lying along side. I had to carefully place into hole in humus pot. Obviously this seed has places to go....! TKS
