Hey, I've been planning a trip to South America for quite a while now in order to visit/network with various ecovillages, communities, etc. and decide whether or not the community I plan on dedicating the rest of my life to starting will be founded somewhere down there as opposed to Northern California. A friend and I were planning on hitching down, but I recently decided it would be amazing to make the trip by bike instead. It would be even more amazing if enough people would join up (from the start or as we go down, as I'm sure we'll meet people on the road) to turn it into an international critical mass/temporary, mobile community. I'm totally ready to make this happen, and am probably starting out on bike despite the number of others starting out with me, but if you or anyone you know would be interested in this kind of thing, get in contact with me! I was originally leaving the 20th of June from L.A., but if I find enough people that need me to wait a bit longer, I wouldn't be completely opposed. Much peace and love,

No one bikes through central america. It is EXTREMELY risky and dangerous.

You will get mugged, and possibly murdered if you plan to travel like that.

    Do backpacking.

Man you pessimistic answer knocked down any enthusiastic view! I think you're wrong though.Well if you're by yourself it's may be dangerous (not only in central america anyway), but being dozens of people , being something big may be a hit!
Congratulations for the idea, I have no way to do it unfortunately..I wish you good luck

Bike thruogh cental America? If you want to die. Or get robbed by a cop who spots a gringo rich enough to buy a bike and travel. Ya know what the cops do down there? they pour sprite into your nose untill you admit to whaterver crime they suggest and then take your 50 bucks and throw you in jail to rot. I dont want to seem rude here, just trying to warn you.

    Peace

It's near impossible to hitch, ride or even walk from North to South America. Haven't you guys heard of the Darian Gap? It's a stretch of swamp and forest that lies at the bottom of Panama bordering with Columbia. More people have climbed Everest in the last ten years than have gone through the Darian Gap on 'terra firma'.

    Last stop, Panama city folks..........

i havent been at central america, but it should be similar to ecuador, where i am from, and here it is reasonably safe if you go with a group, as gerva says. But Golden Avatar is right: you cant cross the Darian jungle by bike

I'm doing this bike trip next June 2008 and am thoroughly looking forward to it! I think all the people who've 'naysayed' this idea are being a bit narrow-minded and should perhaps try to think outside of the conventions of society. Yes, the world is dangerous but it it such wherever you live. I hope this girl did this trip, tell me how it went if you're still out there.

LOL !! Man... you are going to have an awesome trip. Lot's of people bike the route. BUT there is the darien. I have lot's of info on the trip if you want. i drove down just 18 months ago. Please don't buy into all this danger stuff. It is so amazing and 99.8% of everyone you will meet are helpful, wonderful people... even almost every single policeman. Yes you might have a problem... gee ever been in texas ?? LOL.. email me if you want info. I have a ton on getting across the darien... you either fly which is cheap and fast or go on a private boat. i have this stuff for you.
