Other than eating out which is questionable WHEREVER you are, have you found that vegetarian eating habits fit in in most places? I've lived in larger cities all of my life and have seldom had any difficulties finding fresh produce. No one looks at you oddly when you stock up on healthy items. Oddly enough, however, if the shopping cart contains an abundance of vegetables, fruit and tofu I sometimes get asked questions about what it is I do with all of that "stuff".

Ever live somewhere where grains, vegetables and fruit were scarce ?

Variety and quality can be poor during the winter, but I have never had a problem finding fruits, vegetables, and grains. They are still important parts of any diet, even if most people in my area eat a lot of meat.

I have never had anyone say anything about the lack of meat in my cart, but I have apparently educated a few people in what kinds of fruits and vegetables are out there. It seems I usually stump a cashier on atleast one item on each trip to the grocery store. :)

^^ What he said. :) I don't eat a lot of "Health food" specialty items, except as a special treat or experiment, and just fresh foods - produce, beans, and grains and such is available pretty much everywhere (even if thhe variety and quality are poor at times).

I have had a few people comment positively on the healthy selection of foods in my cart... One bitter looking overweight cashier woman last week made a face at my stuff and commented that I must be "on a diet". Once in a while a little old lady in the aisle will tell me how refreshing it is to see young people like me eating real food, and not just pre-packaged convenience junk. I think to a point all the comments I get are just because I strike people as an approachable person (I work from home and my partner works full-time away from home, so some weeks the only social time with humanity I get might be grocery shopping...). In the produce section, people also seem to ask me all the time to clarify where the organic section starts and ends, because I guess I just put out the vibe that I'm the type who would know.... :)

I live in South Philadelphia, and am very close to Center City, and I know of plenty of vegetarian places, to eat in or for fresh produce. The vegetarian Chinese, I think it is called New Haven, is amazing :)

No, and I've lived everywhere from Seattle to total BFE. That's one of the great things about eating so low on the food chain - where could somebody be that they don't have access to produce or a bag of rice (maybe not brown, but still)? Now, you may not have the greatest selection and there may be some seasonal waxing and waning, but I have never ever lived anywhere that you couldn't support yourself on a plant based diet.

I live in South Australia and we are lucky to have some beautiful fresh produce down this way. I don't eat tofu so I guess my shopping basket looks like everyone elses minus the meat!
