Just got dreads today, have wanted them for AAAGGGESSS. Backcombed them in with the help of a friend (though I only did about 5 at the front).

They're pretty loose at the moment, I'm guessing the only thing that will tighten them up is time. How should I go about washing them btw?

    Here are some pics:

i separate mine every day and loosely twist the roots in clockwise circles on my head to tighten them up and then roll them to keep them formed. they still look pretty loose, but i don't care. time will fix all!
i'd wait like 10 days to wash them though, and DON'T USE CONDITIONER!
i had a bath at 8 days and dunked my head in and then used a knotty boy shampoo bar (which is pretty effing amazing!) and just washed the scalp, not the dreads.

anyways, blah blah blah. they look good!

its best not to wash your hair as much at first. even if you can wait more than 10 days i would suggest it. they look awsome though! and dont be affraid if they get loopy, its just them starting to knot up. good luck!

yeah, i should have waited longer but my head was so freaking itchy i had to wash it. plus a boy i know worked on my hair and put WAX into 4 of my dreads and i needed to get most of it out.

i'm trying to go 2-3 weeks this time. :/

:) its all individual.... just i just wait until i need it, which usualy is longer than a week i would say. dont stress about when you wash your hair, just remeber to not wash it everyday. its better for your natural oils to come out of your hair anyways.

KyndMama, are dreads really itchy, or do we just perceive them to be. I've been thinking about this and wondering if what we think is the itches is really just little hairs tugging each other?

well when you dont have dreads you can brush your hair and it moves freely. my head gets pretty itchy sometimes, i believe because of that reason. sometimes from the different pulling it gets little bumpies.

I only waited a few days before washing mine...the more you wash the tighter they get, yo! Just cut the legs off of a pair of pantyhose (new, preferably.) push your hair up into that and wash it with that over the hair so it doesn't fall all out. It'll loosen up after you wash it at first, but whatever. WASH YOUR HEAD!!! Wait 1-2 weeks the first time, though..then wash it once a week or once every few days or whatever works for you. I wash mine once a week, but I rinse my scalp off in the shower every day.

    Looking great!
