Several years ago, I couldn't find portabello mushrooms anywhere. Now delicious portabella mushroom sandwiches are on the menu at a lot of restaurants, and it's really easy to find them in stores. If you like Chinese food, shiitake mushrooms are great in many ethinc dishes. If you haven't sampled mushrooms beyond the wimpy white ones that come in salads, try diversifying. .
I used to hate mushrooms, but now it's like wow look what I was missing all those years. I was with my bro and his roomate the other day, and he was doing some fish on the BBQ, and my bro asked what kind of veggies I wanted. I was like I dunno. I'm not a big veggie fan, unless someone does something where they don't taste so boring. He was like "It's good...we grill them." So OK...so they got some portabello mushrooms, and damn those were good.
I have to be in a mushroom mood...sometimes I can totally pig out on them, and other times, I can't even smell them without feeling sickish...
grilled mushrooms are kick ass. I had this veggie fajita the other day and it had loads of grilled mushrooms in it....my mouth is watering right now thinking about it lol
Yeah, mushrooms definately got me throug hte intermediate stage of getting used to no meat. They even have quorn (sp?) Yeah, the name is horribly unoriginal buuuuut it's a great meat substitute. Has something to do with mushroom proteins, but I have no idea the particulars.
oh man I love mushrooms, in my opinion, there is no beteer food than mushrooms. When I get the opportunity, I go to this place called The Australian Pizza house, if you live in adelaide man go there because they have the nicest mushrrom pizza I have ever eaten. Not for the vegans, but for the vegos, you must try. ohhh yummmm *drools* The have layers and layers of mushroom on a secret tomato and spices sauce and absolutely covered in cheeeeeeese.... oits so juicy and so mushroomy. its like a shroomgasam. oh and mushroom pasta.... *drools* love that, oh and mushroom sauce, AND SOUP! okay if you cant tell I'm addicted, I just love them. but I'm the opposite, I love the texture of cooked ones and I cant stand raw!
oh and I had the nicest vegan pie the other day wholemeal flour pastry, lentil, herb and mushroom. *drools*
I am a mushroom fanboy as well. I've been known to sample P.Cubensis mushrooms every couple of months or so along with the portabellas and others that are store bought for nutrition.
I'm still working on mushrooms..I tried my first ones in april..and the texture is really hard to get used to
If you think about it, mushrooms are the same as meat...just for Veg*ns (without fat too!). They exist out of almost 90 % protein ( the rest mostly water ). And they have a bunch of iron, potassium, etc... just like meat! + they're brown and white like meat too... (is protein brown/white?). They're even called vegetarian meat here in germany. The only thing that's unknown to me is if they have vitamin B12. They're meat and not meat on the same time. OoO ....mushrooms are weird....
actually i agree, my favorite is the white button mushrooms. i like to eat them raw. and the texture of mushrooms in general when cooked just isn't as appetizing. however, a good grilled portobello, if it has a tiny bit of crispiness to it, then its kick ass.
Portabella marinated in roumalade and olive oil and smoked/grilled over hickory smoke with onions, peppers, tomato, eggplant and dijon mustard with a veggie slice on a toasted kaiser. That's currently my favorite recipe... I made one yesterday. ~ George
