    ...Me too.

In art class at the moment, we're drawing (er... I'm attempting to draw) this pile of three boxes... shadows and stuff... but it's kinda boring. I think an interesting still-life would be something nature-ly, like a tree or something. :: ponders:: My ideas suck...

what my one art professor had us do:

take your sketch pad and a pencile and walk around your house and draw two things in each room. I have everything from a (n oh so cliche) fruit bowl to a telephone to a computer mouse to a pillow on a quilt. Some of them were quite good/hard.

Or go to a mall/market and sketch

    go to a park.

whatever inspires you, or give yourself a challenge and sketch things that dont!

    ah, for photo!!

i did some of my 'prized possesions', some of my posessions bundled together (a raelly cool one of all my instruments infront of a marley tapestry. not overly artsy, it was for a 'self portrait without a picture of you'

take an object and put it in an unnatural surrounding, those are usually cool.

if its black and white photo take something with a lot of shadows! one of my favorite pics is just a quilt well lit from the top. so many shades of gray.... it was beautiful. or find a pond or a park or a broken down house....

you just have to view things differently to get photos almost.

    i love photography!!!

id say post in the art forum, you'll definately get responses. and go to deviantart.com

Take a piece of paper and cut a 5x7 inch square out of the center.

    You now have a "viewfinder>
This helps narrow down your field of vision and will help isolate things for a "still life".
Now walk around your house with it and view your everyday objects consentrating on a focal point in each view, but don't center your focalpoint have it a bit off centered.

Another thing you can do is take 3 or 5 items of varying heights and arrange them on a table or shelf and play around with arranging them. Pausing to stand back and use the viewfinder to observe your arrangement.
The objects should be of different textures also to make it more interesting or the same item in different shapes and colors like bottles.

A good one I use is..a pitcher or vase of flowers(or a tall nicely shaped bottle),a bowl of fruit, a plate with a cut piece of fruit on it with a knife or fork on the plate, and a small clock all arranged on a patterned tablecloth. Arrange them with the flowers to one side. Also you don't want your objects too near the edge of the painting, this will box it in. Have something going off the paper or canvas about one third of the way. Or arrange so its all a bit closer together and not near the edges. Let something be in front of another object to give it all some depth, like the bowl of fruit partly covering the vase.

Also another nice one may be to ask your mom for a dress or night gown and drape it over a chair, sketch or paint the chair and gown in focus but blur the surrounding area for a focused look.

Play around with it till it pleases your eye. Don't foget shadows if your looking for a more realistic painting, pick where your light source is coming from and give it all a bit of a highlight from that dirrection.
Or go for a bit of Matisse and make it all one dimension. But very colorful.
    hope some of this helps.
