I agree. I love Hendrix a lot, but I think that there are other musicians who are closer to the "God" level (not literally speaking, of course). Also, the way that you used the term gypsy did seem awfully racist, Axis: Bold As Love. Just because John Petrucci isn't reading this conversation to be affected doesn't mean that there won't be other people offended by what you said. I can't really say much for your defense because, no, I do not generally go around calling people gay, or fat, or a retard. When I do not like someone, it is not because of physical appearance, sexuality, or ancestry.
You can class everyone under the human race as much as you like, but the fact is that not everyone believes in that Hippy stuff. If you don't class gypsys as a race, then what do you class them as? If they aren't a definition of a race, then they're a definition of nothing, and the word would be a pointless word that actually meant nothing. Which begs the question, what EXACTLY were you calling John Petrucci if you think that Gypsies aren't a race of people? Oh, and in fact we are of different races, because we have totally different skull structure which seperates us from each other as being a unified race; thus resulting in us being all different and individual. You're racially ignorant because you're slightly racist, but unknowingly. Perhaps I should have said an "ignorant racist", or a "naive racist".
No, I'm not a racist, and I'll say this as clearly as you like - I do not hate gypsys. So stop bullshitting about 'naive racism', because how can I be a 'naive racist'? And a different skull structure? So what? We all have different bodies, but that doesn't mean that there are six-billion different species of humans out there, does it? And a gypsy can be anyone who travels around. If I travel around, will my skull change? No. Gypsys haven't evolved differently - they lead a different lifestyle. That is the only difference.
not a god. he was just really good. if he was alive today, he'd be right up there with Yngvie Malmsteen.
I take it that you're taking the piss, but I'll let you humour me if it ends this pointless argument.
Yes, in that god is everything, then everything is god. Since Jimi was a part of everything then, and since, he is god. But then, so are you.
Isn't it all about being individual? What blows my mind may be different than what blows someone else's. Some folks are impressed with the million mile an hour scale players. Others prefer a rift with slow well chosen notes that move them. Some favour bluegrass, others blues.
On sheer playing ability I would say a hell of alot of people are better than him, such as John McLaughlin. Many guitarists could easily out-do Hendrix by improvisation skills, and also playing ability and technique. He was definitely not the best of the best. He did, however, revolutionized the guitar.
Was Jimi Hendirx God? Jimi Hendrix was not a black "God" with an afro-hairstyle. Definitely, not some old-foggy, white "God" with a long, gray mustache. Jimi Hendrix was just part of this Oneness. Just like you and me.
Hendrix was revolutionary, he was only around for a small period of time, yet his music has lasted for decades, now that takes talent. However.... sometimes I wonder how awesome he truly was, I mean, if I took as many drugs as him, I bet I could seem pretty unique and "god-like" too. But, the one thing that's for sure is, no one could rock a pink headband like he did. That's for certain
Hey who knows - he could've been. He was a mind blowingly good guitarist..I sometimes feel demoralised about playing the guitar when listening to him...I wonder if anyone like him will ever exist again.
I know a lot of people who take drugs who are not god-like. He was much more than that. I agree that he pulled off the pink headband very well .
in some senses a God is a person that does something way beyond what anybody else on the planet was able to conceptualise as being possible to create. God status I think just takes that to a new extreme. I think had he lived a full life he would have done that.
John McLaughlin is quicker, true, but I'd like to see him play like Hendrix. The same goes for Hendrix about McLaughlin. To say that quicker guitarists are better is just plain ridiculous. Michael Angelo is perhaps the quickest in the world, but he is by no means the best. He even did a (crap) cover of 'Purple Haze'. Yngwie Malmsteen is very fast, but who thinks that he is the best? You mentioned John Petrucci, but Paul Gilbert is a lot faster. His first solo LP was called 'A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix'. G3 always cover Hendrix stuff. These guys all know that they owe him a lot. Without Hendrix, there would have been no Satriani, which would mean no Hammett, EVH, Vai etc. Fuck those shredders, Hendrix is a lot better.
Who's comparing them on speed ability? The only person who's doing so is you; because I certainly haven't. Also, to play like Hendrix really isn't that hard, especially for a technical player. Hendrix's style is by no means technical in a musical sense, and I would assume that McLaughlin wouldn't have that much trouble playing standard Blues-Rock. Yes, Hendrix has done alot for guitarists, but he is by no means a God; more like an innovator, whom there are plenty of for each style.
