Not necessarily.. Metal is music that carries a meaning. Portraying suicide on an album cover may be dark but it is signifying part of life and the bonds between emotion, stress/frustration and nature. This in turn could say a lot about the album itself and what kind of messages are in the songs. Y'no, if you LOOK deeper, then that cover art could signify or relate to many things; the songs contained in the album could help people through depression or fits of frustration, self hatred, whatever - and ideally turn their heads. It's part of life; people kill themselves. The cover obviously portrays this. Sad though it is, you'll just have to deal with it!
I'm not the hugest Black Metal fan *doesn't really like any of the bands on the poll =/* but I do love 1349. Frost (Known for: Zyklon-B, Satyricon, Gorgoroth, Keep of Kalessin...) is the drummer for 1349... if that makes my post a slight bit on-track =P
I voted Burzum Altho I prefer his last two ambient albums to his pre-prison albums Emperor come in second
wow, its cool to see some fellow nz black metalers on theses forums. I vote Dimmu borgirs first two albums (when they were a proper black metals band)
That was like, 14 years ago, when a rash of these incidents broke out around the same area around the same time. That's since died out, it's not really relevant to the black metal scene today. Ocassionally there will be some mild copy cat here and there but it's not by any stretch of the imagination "loads of them" who do so. Black metal is all talk no action
Well, sorta. Part of the reason these violent acts started out in early 90s Norway was because they were tired of death metal's lack of action, despite the gory lyrics. But that died out. There are few such acts committed today, and when they are, they're usually laughed at by the black metal scene itself. How many of the bands who sport a Satanic image even practice Satanism? Almost none. Most of them knowingly do it for show. As for those who actually believe in it, the closest you're usually going to get is a few 16 year olds in their mom's basement. Though I will say that most NSBM bands do have Nazi beliefs in real life, and many of the bands who carry a pagan/viking image have a genuine interest in Asatru in real life.
Indeed, relatively there are very few practising satanism as much as they use it in their music, but black metal is for a large part about paganism/folklore, which is quite often a pretty serious matter for those musicians. I love that. I've no problem with satanism and occultism in black metal, on the contrary, I love that as well. But the ones who take satanism too seriously are a bit of a joke in my opinion. I also can't stand those people who cut themselves on stage..
"but black metal is for a large part about paganism/folklore" Right, to me this is the heart of black metal. As you listen to more of it you realize that the satanism image you see on surface isn't serious, but the nature and folk themes are, and I think that provides a really beautiful aesthetic.
You got it! Although a lot of the time musically much simpler then a subgenre like death or progressive metal, I find black metal much more intruiging musically and lyricswise. Ah, technical death metal with its grunts is nothing for me. It's all about atmosphere, which black metal has plenty of. And there are enough bands like Emperor for example that prove that black metal can be technical as well without losing it's strength or atmosphere.
I think each of the 3 extreme metal subgenres tends to specialize in an aspect of metal that people find appealing. Death metal - Technicality Black metal - Atmosphere Doom metal - Heavyness People gravitate towards the one of those they like most.
Dude, fuck all of these. Where's Gorgorav? They freakin crucified people upside down on stage and BURNED CHURCHESto promote their album. That's pretty freakin metal.
Gorgorav? Gorgoroth is the most boring band of a very overrated scene. And they did not burn churches. About the satanic image: there has been a rise in "seriousness" when it comes to satanic lyrics in some black metal circles in the 2000s. Bands like Armagedda, Ondskapt, Deathspell Omega etc. "Religious black metal", it's sometimes called. They look/sound less like they only do it for the shock factor, like those old-school bands that still adorn their cd sleeves with amateurish black-and-white drawing of an anthropomorphic goat raping some biatches and/or torturing Jesus.
Varg burned churches along with other members of mayhem...and it was a cover of a Burzum record(i actually have part of the rock from that church that was suppose to grant wishes)...and i voted Mayhem...i loved Dead...he was great for the genre and so was Varg...Pure Fucking Armageddon was a great record...plus Euronomyous(sp?) was nuts and crazy weird... How is Burzum not a band? its only one man style ^_^ Ondskapt!! hahaha...i havent listened to them for a while...^_^
