Just read "Notes" again myself! About the 6th time. Super marvelous! I had to read "Karamazov" twice and still have trouble keeping the end straight. But, it's a great novel if you're into spiritual things or existentialism.
A fellow writer recommended I should read "The Brothers Karamazov" as well. Do you think that's his best work, al-Hallaj? He more-or-less told me the ending, but because it's a classic I don't think that it will spoil things for me. Hopefully.
White Nights is a beautiful novella by Dostoevsky. The protagonist falls in love with a woman who thinks that she has been rejected by her fiance. He tries to encourage her, while secretly hoping that she has been rejected, so she will marry him. Eventually, her fiance comes back into her life with a plausible explanation of the misunderstanding. The story ends sadly for the protagonist, but I love the story, because he reminds me of myself. My identity with him is total.
