Hug or shake hands, depends on how open they seem to be.

I'm all touchy-feely... makes some Americans uncomfortable, you people and your damn personal space bubble. I make sure to break every person's personal space bubble... human contact is a good thing, learn this.

Depending on the sex, I lick their faces or sniff their bums.
No, I say hello and then introduce myself.

I have this rather difficult handshake that I try to force people to learn. Not many get it. But hey, It's FUN!

well eastern cultures are more open still :)
we have a lot of bodily contact when we meet and part.

depending on the person's vibe I've met, I personally will :

    a. shake hands (may/may not also involve my second hand grasping his/hers)
    b. hug
    c. shake hands and kiss two cheeks
    d. hug and kiss two cheeks
    e. rape immediately (kidding)

one more thing, I hate "loose" hugs. if we have a good vibe between, we should hug tightly, letting all our energies flow into each other.

Goodness, I'll bet you have a lot of unexpected children just by meeting new people.

When I meet 'old' people, I shake hands because they ALWAYS hold their hand out, though generally when I'm with people my age, I just say hi before walking away awkwardly...not really, but I don't really start talking right away. I'm not extremely confident, though I make it up with dashing good looks and radical intelligent-ness.

I voted for "nothing... too shy."
I guess I'll usually say, "hi," but a lot of the time I just stand there awkwardly.

i agree that eastern cultures are more open and i sorta dislike all this personal space stuff and "manners" when you are supposed to be reserved and polite, and that's all...

though when i met some americans they were pretty nice and didnt care for the personal space stuff:)

That's because you didn't meet Americans in America.

Like some people already said, it depends on the vibes I get from the person but usually I'll smile, say hello (or whatever else) and give a kiss on one cheek (or both, depending on what country I'm in!).

Depends on the person, if they look friendly/nice, then I would say hi with a smile and keep talking to them but even though I talk, I'm still very shy. I never hug people when I first meet them, not because I don't want to, I'm too shy.

    mojet....
maybe foreigners in russia try to adjust to what they think is russian way of life: much vodka and open-mindness...
ok what about americans in america then?
    business-like and indifferent??

    Americans in America.

    Naive...

That would be a good word to describe most of the population...

    And ignorant.

I have social anxiety disorder, so I always fear I'll say something stupid, so I never start a conversation with someone. If I'm introduced to someone new I'll usually look away and shake their hand and say "hi." I guess people probably assume I'm a bitch, but unfortunately, I have this stupid disorder that makes me act this way when I'm around people I don't know well.

I often say "Hi, nice to meet you" or something like that. But when I'm drunk, I give big hugs to everybody, hahaha!
