Anyone here into this side of it all? I've been starting with some simple beats on Cubase and stuff..gotta get some good drum software though, the maps of Cubase reek of crapness. And a synth. [IMG]

This'd be cool if it was a big thread with loads of tips and stuff you know? For people who want to get into it,like myself.

    Sweet.
Making music is my passion, i'm glad theres some others who feel they wanna get into it.

First off: what version of cubase you using SX is better than VST purley on the amount/quality of exisiting samples, although always better to upload your own, for this (samples) I find Cool Edit Pro a very intresting and handy way to distort, render samples as well as being able to host almost any file type.

Other programmes to use that i have found pretty handy and fun include Reason, albeit hard to grasp at first is a brilliant piece of software and is a lot cheaper than buying a full on rack set up of effects modules and samplers. Logic Pro is probably the daddy in terms of easy to use effect software. (my opinion).

If you got any questions, PM me and I'll do my best to solve any problems.
Also, what sort of music you making? Ive been DJ and makin Drum n Bass/Experimental/Drill n Bass for about 4-5 years.

    Keep the dream alive.

    Peace&/OrLove

    :D

    I've got SX.

I think I'll be getting a new desktop 'pooter soon so I'm gonna get that set up for making tunes. My sister's boyfriend is one of the most incredible people I know and he knows loadsa stuff about recording and mixing and whatnot so he'll be able to help me out.

Gotta get a good keyboard soon..and some drum software. But this computer wouldn't be able to handle it.. only 386mb of RAM or something, and because it's RAMBUS ram it can't fit any more :p

Guess I'll be waiting a while!

You're not THE Klute are you? Never had you down as a hippy. Loved the sound on the first 2 albums, wasn't so keen on a lot of the stuff when Comercial Suicide got started and pretty much stopped bothering with the majority of dnb around then...

    What about Acid?

I'm looking to sample from CDs and such and basically do random wacky mash ups.
    What's best for that??

Cubase's drum map isn't bad at all, at least in C4. I don't have any of the earlier versions. I use it with Battery 3 as a plugin, and I don't think there's anything I can't do with rhythm.

i recommend a program called REASON.

    manufacturers site: http://www.propellerheads.se/
wiki article on the program: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reason_%28software%29

essentially all the instruments and effects are put into this program, and you control as if you would with real instruments (synths, drummachines, samplers, etc) and effects.
it's got a built in sequencer as well.. a lot of cool features, better to check the wiki page that have me explaining i'd say..

it's most fun with a midi controller, but you can download virtual midi drivers and use plugins to use a regular computer keyboard to control the instruments.
you can dl a trial version off their site, and it's easy to find a cracked version of the program on bittorrent.. the new version should be out in a few months as well and looks insane

I've been making music using computers for almost 6 years now. Fruity loops, audacity, cubase, and random distorted samples and recordings are what I use.

FlexMusic is an interesting software sequencer for $20. i've been playing with it a little.

back in ancient history i had built myself some analog paia kits and had a vox jag i played through them. some kind of keyboard midi controller is on my 'some day when i can afford to get arround to it to get list'. i wouldn't mind getting my hands on some of those now mostly forgotten analog synths from the days of just before midi too.

gads anything. there's an extreme drought of anything to make musical noise on at my house currently.

that monster bathory-curts (that's not spelled right, but it's something like that) has on his website is cool too, but trying to play it with just a mouse is rather limiting.

oh yah, i've got audacity too, mostly using it to tweek up free downloads so they play at the same level as each other to spare my head and my speakers.

i don't know of any practical way to actually MAKE music with it though. well i do know about the one really futzy way of laying down tones with it, but that doesn't seem very practical. though i'm sure it has more capabilities then i've as yet used or am familiar with.

(i did run the .wav's through it i made with my free seven days of Flex)

aditional notes: flex music (i've just now found out, ALSO) has a comple suite of other tools. all in the $15 to $35 range.

another site i've just found with useful linx and useful itself is http://www.vintagesynth.com/ and the do have links to a number of software synth sites. not all cheapies though, but some them are pretty good. most are pro-quality/price, but there are some more affordable ones.

then there's always synthmusic.com i think it is, anyway an e-zine called synth music direct, which has a fairly impressive and potentially useful linkfarm of its own.
