I have been low on money lately, so I haven't been able to afford the top-shelf imports that I love. I have been drinking mostly domestic craft brews for the past several weeks. Tonight, I picked up a six-pack of Leinenkugel's "Sunset Wheat". I wanted to try something different, which I hadn't tried before, and I wish I didn't. I should have known based on Leinenkugel's other sub-par beers that this would be absolute crap. Now I know. Avoid this beer at all costs. To describe this beer is easy. It tastes more like pop than beer. The taste is incredibly sweet and artificial. The carbonation level is unnatural. This beer tastes like liquid fruity pebbles. Absolute CRAP! I wasted my money because I cannot stomach this shit. I am dumping the rest of this swill down the drain. It's clear Leinenkugel does not know how to make beer. Every beer I have had from them has sucked.
for low on money (or cost) i've liked d.w. dundee's IPA. (the makers of the crappy honey brown make a damn good ipa).
Yeah, that's made here in Rochester where I live. Their IPA is quite good, considering I can get a six-pack around here for about $4.
yeah, the sunset wheat's no good. i can enjoy the red lager on occasion when i'm low on money though...but its not something that i'd bother decanting, which does say a lot. their doppelbock isn't very good, either, but at least its not budweiser or miller. i'll drink -some- of their beers occasionally, but usually i'll prefer not to, particularly if something else is available. if you haven't tried it before, gordon biersch's hefeweizen isn't terrible. i tried it not too long ago when trying to save money and was extremely skeptical because i've not had good experiences with other american hefes and because it was inexpensive. i was pleasantly surprised by it, though. dont get me wrong - i'm not saying its great, but it IS a tasty beer and decently passable as a hefeweizen even though its not as rich or full bodied as many of its german counterparts.
oh and hey....i dont know what you think of this beer, but i used to love baltika #6 (baltic porter) its a buck or two for a 500ml bottle, and its oh so slightly on the strong side at 7%ABV cheap, does the trick, and actually a pretty good beer. its better than leinies, thats for sure.
