This may be useful to the debate or not?:
My Mum told me that in the 1950s before I was born-she could leave her front door open & so could every one else in the street because.......& this is the important bit:'No one had anything worth stealing!!'.
There's a moral to that, don't you think?.

I don't remember that. People were racists towards me as early as first grade. And I can't ever remember sexual orientation not being considered a good reason to kill someone, at least where I live(d).

    Wow...where you guys live sounds...scary.

I mean, New Zealand is getting worse. There are certain streets in certain areas where gang violence and petty crimes are a very real problem. Murders seem to be increasing every month too...

But generally, because we are such a small country i guess, crime is still a big deal. Homicides are national news, other crimes - like beatings, muggings etc..are local or reginal news. I mean, I don't even think I know anyone personally who has been mugged here.

and as for locking doors - half the student flats here don't actually lock, and while there are robberies, no one seems to care that much. Most people just leave the front door open most of the day.

We aren't a total safe paradise - bad stuff does happen, but it is nowhere near as bad as some of the above stuff...I mean,,,that's so scary!

This kind of thing still exists in Australia. You can just leave your house unlocked and you will probably be fine. The streets are perfectly safe at night, though unfortunately, the country is quite dull to be honest.

only when i was real little where i felt safe to be in my house and outside and riding my bike but now things are so bad. i fear for my little sister because i remember back in my old neighborhood i had two instances that really freaked me out. one was when i was in my backyard and i saw two people were trying to make me come to them, it was the freakiest thing when you are only like 8 or 10 years old. and then one time i was walking to my mom-mom house who was only 4 blocks away from my house and this guy was following me, i ran so fast and even took different streets just so the guy wouldnt catch me. since then i have always be on guard just in case.

nowadays you always hear of random shots, especially philly or about children aductions, you can't trust anything anymore. its a scary place out there.

When I was a kid in the 60's during the summer my Mom would kick us out of the house by 8AM. You weren't allowed back until lunch. You had to be home and in the house by the time the street lights were on. We roamed the neighborhood with other kids and no one ever got molested or kidnapped. And we lived in a small city (100,000 plus population) I never remeber finding the front door locked. One thins about Jr. High and High school that was way different. There were plenty of fistfights but if you ever pulled a knife or anything then you were a social outcast and considered to be a pussy (guns weren't even considered.) And after the fight you usually shook the other guys hand and became friends. It's how I met my best friend of 40 years.

There never was a time when it was safe, it has just got so bad because the increase in population. There has always been murder, kidnappings, drive-bys, it's just now there are a lot more people to kill and the media likes to highlight the worst of it. You just can't be a bitch about it and let it worry you.

I really wish it was like that, the whole not worrying about the other guy pulling a gun or a knife or something. Weapons are only needed if it's more of a life or death situation, if you have to pull a gun/knife to flex nuts then you a pussy, pretty much how it should be but guns and knives help bullies spread fear.

i live on a small estate in North Yorkshire and my boyfriend went out leaving the back door wide open the other day, (by accident) i came home after an 8 hour shift and everything was still here. ok we wouldn't make a habit of it, but i don't think it's as bad here as some people make out it is. we've left our cars unlocked a lot as well and they wern't hot wired during the night, so i do feel safe when i go out. i probably wouldn't in a big city, but i would never have the inclination to want to move to one anway.
