Why are hippies so hated

I am noticing that as socioty becomes more and more advanced people who dont conform to it(hippies) are becoming hated even more hated. For example in the media, i was watching a show called south park a couple weeks ago, and they had an entire episode dedicated to the hatered of hippies. To name a couple of other shows" king of the hill" "American Dad" all frequently bring down the hippie. So my question is this. Why?

I thought that South Park episode was some funny shit, so...don't take yourself so seriously. Get out of the self righteous, everybody hates me phase and get into some good ol' people lovin'. Learn to laugh. Life is funny, so slap on a smile and enjoy it.

 

Dang man, everyone is talking about that South Park episod...I WANNA WATCH IT! Anyone know where I could go to see it? Haha, actually I think its funny when hippies are put on television, it entertains me and I dont really take it offensively, its just funny. [= Family Guy makes fun of hippies too, but they only do it for ratings and comedy, its all good.

TV makes fun of every stereotype out there, people just seem to only get offended when the stereotype of their clique is mocked, it all happens, just don't take it seriously, it's fuckin television, if you don't like what's on TV don't watch TV, it's fairly simple

and of course anyone who isn't willing to keep with the times is going to be made fun of for it, look at the whole iPod situation, it's devided between kids with iPods and kids without them, it's like having an iPod is a status symbol, all the richy rich kids have them, and the kids who can't afford an iPod, or maybe the kids that are more sensible and realize that it's not the end of the world whether you listen to music on an iPod or on a generic Mp3 player they don't have an iPod and they pay a price by being poked fun at, it's a cruel circle, but an unavoidable one none-the-less,

i get made fun of because of my choice to revert against most modern technology, i haven't turned my cell phone on in 2 weeks, i hardly use the computer unless i'm on hipforums, i watch TV here and there, i use my GENERIC Mp3 player (that's right, no fuckin iPod for me, fuck Apple) because that's the only form of music i have, if i had music on any other medium i'd use it extensively, but i don't. it's a choice i've made, but i do have to live with the fact that some people don't see the intrusion of technology the same way i do and believe that they have to have every new piece of tech that comes out

 

Yeah, I think most of the negative remarks directed towards hippies in the media are sarcastic and just humorous (unless it's on FOX). The problem is, there are so many people out there that don't get that it's sarcasm and they think they should actually hate hippies for some reason.

but it's easy to hate what you don't understand, and hippies are not widely understood, just looked upon as people who are stoned 24/7 and wanna save the environment

The reason society hates hippies is cuz they all smell bad, dress bad, they're all junkies, they don't understand anything, and they've all got VD.....hippies are the worst society has to offer, especially those damn rainbow folks.

 

Hey, where does "everybody hate hippies" come in? Man, pretty much all the people I've met think hippies are cool. It's just television, man. Btw, short-man, from what I've seen, kids who have iPods just share with the kids who don't using those split headphone thingies. But, whatever. Peace and love.

 

Ok, its really pretty simple. Hippie politics are often quite radical and are a challange to the status quo. Whether it be environmentalism or animal rights people don't want to think about the impact they have on the earth or its creatures and when they are reminded of these facts they get defensive and start verbally attacking people trying to make the other seem irrational.

As for southpark, I think they are actually a very pro-hippie show. The only character that hates hippies is cartman and he is constantly shown to be completely crazy. I think he serves as the voice the writers use to make fun of themselves.

i've seen kids who don't have iPods run around school and mooch iPods off people they know, it's quite sad really

i have seen people sharing their iPods with other people, but 90% of it is just them showing them a song they found last night touring on iTunes, it's still quite sad

Watching a show called South Park? You sound lame just saying that! That show rocks! They could make fun of my own dying grandmother and I would LMAO! I love the music festival that lasts for 7 months until they crank up Slayer and everyone leaves. That is so classic.

 

People fear what they do not understand and hate what they can't conquer.

Next time you get dogged on for being a hippie by someone, just point at the pot their smoking (and if they arent smoking, roll one). Most likely a hippie touched it before they did.

 

Cartman rules! This whole hippie thing you speak of is rediculous. You dont have to be a pussy to be a hippie. Grow a pair for christ sake! I love killing both birds and fish for consumption. I have been a commercial fisherman for about 10 years but also am very concience of environmental concerns in an indusrty in the middle of several debates concerning the environment.

Alot of you are just nutjobs and have no idea what the real world is all about while others have a clue and see how complicated some issues , such as commercial fishing are. We all need to survive and make a living. Some of those things are very harmful to the earth , but if done with a concience , can cause less impact.

 

Yeah, nobody hated nonconformists in the sixties! It's not fair. As for Southpark, they fuck with anybody. Like some other people already pointed out in this thread, don't take it so personally when they're having fun of your subculture. People get offended way to quickly indeed. Open your mind more and be a bit more tolerant, even if it's not your kind of humor.

south park and other t.v. shows have always been making fun of our kind so you really can't just push it all on a few episodes because it was coming sooner or later..... and it just happened to be sooner!

 

Exactly. It isn't only hippies it is anything that isn't according to thier standards. Wether its a Hippie or a Rasta. PPL just are scared these days, scared of the unknown and politicians are using this fear to get what they want (Power). The problem is because of this the ppl feel thier fear is justified and they get more entrenched in thier fears. It is a bit sad really. Also how they demand that they can use free speech (which ofcourse they can) and then want to bann it for others or call it demonizing when you criticise them or that they are nationalistic. A good example in my country is Geert Wilders, he does the exact thing that I describe above. Shout and screams when he isn't alowed to speak but tries to bann others from speaking if he doesn't agree or simply insults them. In my eyes this guy is just abusing the fear of Islam/The Left of the political spectrum/Anything deviant from them to get into power.
