My sister might have a cavity and she's been complaining of a tooth ache. Anyone have any remedies to ease a tooth ache? And if you have a cavity, what's the best thing to do for it? Is it totally necessary to see a dentist?

you should prob go to a dentist but to prevent new cavities, look into oil pulling... it helps with many health issues esp. in the mouth. also get her some oragel, it'll help with the pain until she can get to the dentist.

Unfortunately, the only thing that causes more problems then going to the dentist is NOT going to the dentist.

I took really good care of my teeth - brushing and flossings and all that - and still got cavities. The dentist's attitude was like 'well, you must've not brushed in years!' and it really got to me! It put me right off dentists and I didn't go back for years and years. If I got a toothache, I dabbed oil of cloves on it with a cotton bud and it usually went away in a day or two.

Now, though, what should've been pretty minor, fixable things have become pretty major because I ignored them for so long. I might have to go to hospital and get some teeth ripped out under anaesthetic. Eeek!!

The moral of Ethel's Tale of Woe? Yep, dentists are crap, but you really can't avoid them. They'll get you in the end, and teh longer you leave it, the worse it'll get.

Awww, Ethel, I hope everything goes okay with your tooth extraction. My housemate is in the same boat because he hates dentists so much. They are arrogant fuckers, aren't they? It's been a good two years since I've seen one - this reminded me that maybe I should try to get an appointment in...*shudder*

Chewing grass is actually great for tootheaches...and it works. Try it.

Tootheaches are usually caused by overeating, and eating too much sweet food...Our blood gets too gassy and our body does not want any more food, except grass...Seriously, try it. You can chew almost anything on a tootheache and it will hurt, except grass.

I'm going to counter that with the fact that if you have a HOLE in your TOOTH, it's probably a good idea to go get it patched up. I don't think eating some grass will cure tooth decay.

If it is a cavity probably better to get it checked out so it doesnt get worse and eventually need a root canal.

you can buy those little bent dentist mirrors to check and see if there is a visible cavity.

make sure your toothpaste has flouride in it and not bleaching agents which wear down the enamle and cause pain.

Fluoride is bad...........it's a carcinogen, it affects your brain, and it doesen't even help your teeth. They recently did a study in Canada of the prevention of cavities via flouridation in Toronto and Vancouver, Toronto flouridates the water, Vancouver doesn't........guess what, Toronto had a higher rate of cavities than Vancouver.

Theres also such a thing as naturopathic dentists though their hard to find if you don't live in a progressive type of place.

Cool about wheatgrass...that stuff is good for everything. Internally, topically, all over, lol...

Some fluoride is actually a natural mineral found in certain spring waters. A lot of it is a toxic byproduct/industrial waste that has been sold to us as something good for our teeth. I don't use anything with fluroide, including tap water. I just brush with essential oil of oregano.

you should always see your dentist. Why wouldn't you? If there is a cavity, no remedies or amount of brushing will help and you are only giving the bacteria more time to go deeper towards your nerves. If you go to the dentist regularly they can catch cavities at a point where you need a painless and quick airbrushing to help, instead of panful and expensive root canal.

Hmm Being without Health or dental insurance because of astronomical costs that I can't afford. I have learned a few things about my body~ Eat right and I feel better, Excersize and I can breathe better, Don't pollute myself with extra "ingredients" as in commercial shampoos and lotions and my skin thanks me. If I get a toothache I dab some oregano oil on it. Also I've used a drop or 2 of colloidal silver on my tooth and it helps. I have to say that I only brush my teeth about once a week with toothpaste or baking soda, I don't have many problems except coffee stains. The last time I went to a Dentist, the filling I got was uneven and caused discomfort and it is cracked. If you go to a dentist make sure they are a GOOD one and pay the extra 20 percent or whatever it is because it will make a difference. Always go for the white emalgum never the silver(which they still have in use) I would LOVE to see my old dentist, the really good expensive one, but I just don't have the cash for it so if you have access to a good dentist then you should take advantage of it while you can!
