Doing dreads over spring break, do local stores like wal-mart have wax substitute?

I don't want to order dread wax over the internet, are there recipes or good substitute that local stores might carry?

    Wow, fast response!

One big problem I have is my dad thinks it will be impossible to find work this summer with dreads. Is this true, and are there some good ways to make them less noticeable/more professional looking?

put them up or hide them under something. that's about it. You can use aloe vera to tidy up the frizzies a little bit.

absolutely get the idea of wax or wax subsitutes out of youir head!
    keep your dreads clean
dont put any crap in your hair
    be patient
    ask questions here
ignore every other fuckin site out there that push wax
ya do wax & you'll be bald in 6 months or less
unless your very lucky & get most of the crap out somehow

actually... elmers probably washes out a whole lot easier than wax... since it is water soluble... still doesnt mean i want it on my dreads though.

Okay no wax =P Is aloe vera okay, I have some laying around?

My hair's pretty straight, it would take a year to even START knotting up, is there a reason not to backcomb?

If you want to backcomb go ahead, you'll hear a myriad of responses on that. I don't feel its necessary, it generally unravels from the backcomb before it really starts to knot up anyway, but some people seem to think it helps so go with your gut. If you use aloe to calm frizzies/moisturize whatever, try to use aloe without menthol in it (clear aloe), I don't know if menthol hurts anything but it definitely smells.

Also have PATIENCE, dreads do NOT come overnight, or even in a few months, they take alot of time, it's definitely a journey and you will learn from it. It's been said over and over again but i'll say it again: dreads are not a hairstyle, they are a lifestyle. This is so true and with time you will begin to understand what nobody here can adequately put into words. Enjoy the journey!

    dont use wax.

and you can find jobs. i found two rather easily, in a very conservative state with dreads and even a pending court case against me..
anything is possible. some places will care. but most care more about how you present your personality.

Alright, well I'll be starting tomorrow when I get home from school. How would I go about getting them looking the most like dreads by the time spring break ends. I realise it takes months for them to get mature, but how could I optimize the look so that when spring break ends, they're starting to look like early dreads? My hair is very straight, by the way.

backcomb if your in a vanity rush. and they'll take years to mature, not months.
