Hi my name is Gareth and I am doing paper music, culture and politics, so if you can help in anyway I would by very grateful. Please if you would like to participate in the poll could you please state your nationality, Thanks with American films acounting for more than 70% of box office reciepts worldwide and paticularly dominating the British, German, French and Italian markets, I wanted to establish how influential has America's popular culture been in reshaping the identity of the rest of the world. Ziauddin Sardar and Merryl Wyn Davies suggests that "anyone who grew to years and conciousness with the rise of the technology of mass communications grew up with America by just watching television - America's heros are ours and not ours." How legitimate or relevant do you think this view is to you personally?
I would say partially ~ I can't omit American pop culture entirely, especially being Canadian and living so close to the US ~ Then again, 90% of the movies and tv shows, from that aspect, are anything but American.
Again thanyou for your response, please feel to participte in the poll regardless of knowledge -just personal experience. Thankyou
I'm Canadian so almost all media is American, music, movies it's all shit, the American Pop scene which is why I don't watch tv, listen to the radio or any media Hollywood puke really don't need it in my head so avoid peace
Are you speaking of today's American Music? I think Americans were influential (sp?) in creating some of the best music including Jazz & Blues. ALL Movies whereever made are a waste of time. Let's remember American Idol was created in England.
Well being American I would have to say that American Popular Culture influenced me a great deal, lol.
Despite living 30 minutes to the border, I would say American pop culture has NOT be all that influential on me. When it comes to music, I listen to mostly Canadian or German music. As for movies I do watch quiet a bit of American movies, however prefer watching Canadian and movies from the U.K. The Canadian movies may not have the high production costs and may seem somewhat cheap, but the storylines tend to be MUCH better. Television shows, I watch mostly British shows with the exception of some Canadian shows and sports.
I don't think it's been influential in my life at all, with the possible exception of some music. Black Sabbath has been a good motivator for me. Their music is all about the problems faced by people like me and who come from similar backgrounds. Aside from that pop culture hasn't had much influence. I really try to steer away from the commerialism and live my own life as the situation dictates and based on my own decisions.
