    the celis grand cru is good, but not quite what i was hoping for. i think beeradvocate may have it sorted improperly...it's listed under witbiers, and said to be essentially just a strong wit like don de dieu

    the sixpack says nothing to this effect, citing that it is an ale "brewed with spices" and noting it's use of "pale barley malts." it makes no mention whatever of wheat and no claim that it is a type of witbier.

    further it doesnt have any characteristics of a wit as far as appearance or flavor are concerned. its completely transparent and obviously fully filtered. it is spiced in a similar style to a wit, and definitely has some coriander in it. according to the packaging it also contains curacao orange peel which is as standard an ingredient in a witbier as coriander.

    all in all it was good, but i'll take my time with it most likely. i'd say it was more similar to the likes of duvel (except for the spiciness) than a strong witbier. i intend to try and hang on to this stuff for some time and hopefully a little age will mellow out the spices in it. i really don't know that it doesnt contain wheat, but it doesnt look or taste like it to me, and the packaging sure as hell didnt mention it.

    tonight i've got a fourpack of blanche de chambly (well, technically only three left as i had one with lunch), a bottle of ommegang's rare vos, and a bottle of fuller's 1845, along with the celis grand cru and armagnac i have on hand. i may drink just a little of the brandy, but none of the grand cru and not all of the other beers of course. probably just the rare vos and another blanche de chambly.

    Yes, it is a double wit brewed with orange and corriander. Most wits do use pale barley malts in their brews.

    Blanche De Chambly, which you claimed is a favorite of yours, is also a heavily filtered witbier, so I don't see what the problem is as far as that goes.

    Celis is an average grand cru in the witbier style. The Hoegaadren Grand Cru is a bit better, but the style is the same as the Celis.

    blanche de chambly isn't really what i'd consider a favorite at this point in time, but its pretty good, and it may be partially filtered but it sure isn't entirely. i'm drinking a glass right now - and i sure as hell can't see through it. it pretty cloudy, really. not entirely opaque, but if i put my hand on the other side of the glass i can't see details at all, just a shadow.

    i understand that most wheat beers do NOT exclusively use wheat with no barley at all, but i just would have expected the celis grand cru to mention it at least if it is in fact there. it just doesnt seem like theres any significant amount of wheat in it as far as flavor is concerned. just my personal opinion and speculation - i didnt exactly look into it.

    also i didnt mention the crystal clarity of the grand cru as a negative; i just don't expect complete filtering with most wheat beers. it doesnt make a huge difference, but it does make some difference. anyways it really doesnt matter too much....

    anyway, i'm super excited about the rare vos. after trying the three philosophers blend and the hennepin saison, i'm pretty confident that most offerings from ommegang are bound to be great. i'll probably have this rather than the fullers 1845 tonight.

    yesterday i kept it simple and just drank a few cans of murphy's stout and a few bottles of smithwicks....also had another beer and a shot of brandy before dinner.

    tonight....i dunno. i was considering picking up some storm king imperial stout, or another thing of hennepin, or maybe unibroue 15 or edition 2005....i guess i'll see. maybe i'll just drink what i have at home.

    but here i am and its actually saint patricks day now and all i have left is one smithwicks (well, and more celis grand cru and brandy, but neither of those are irish at all...who really cares though. i have to work early tomorrow anyway)

    {btw rat, i tried the grand cru again, and i must have already been drunk when i tasted it the first time. its all kinds of wheaty. guess i should limit new beers to very early in the evening if i'm going to have a few!}
