There has been a study that if you have differnt names you wont be accepted for Jobs later on in life! Pretty sad!

I wanted to name Dakota, Dakota Rainbow. But DH said it was just too far out there. When he was going to be a little girl from China she was going to be Dakota Rayne. But now that he ended up being a little boy from Guatemala he is Dakota Garcia instead.

Exactly. My name is Serenity. When I graduated, I was the only one out of 700! I was always glad it wasn't super common. Who wants a name that everyone else has? Anyway, I like those nature names...so don't make fun anyone!lol.

My name is Natalie toooooooo :)

    it's cool, I dig it, y0.

As far as interesting names go, I like the whole "unique first name followed by a traditional middle name" thing. It sounds like it would work just fine. :)

    peace :)

PS I like "freedom shantari kirkpatrick", but I can see why you changed it, hehe.

Ghetto names are fine, hippy names annoy me because people seem to always choose the same ones.

Okay...assuming that the study some of you brought up was completely accurate and unbiased (and these things rarely are) and it truly IS harder to get a job with an unusual name...do you really think it will still be like that in 10-20 years? i seriously doubt it!

Lets say Shane and Freedom are applying for the same job. They have identical job experiences and educations (yeah right, but this is a hypothetical example); they are equally charismatic, and hard-working; they are also equally handsome (lets just throw that in, to make sure there are NO differences). Oh hell, lets say they are identical twins to boot (an no, that doesn't mean that they are necessarily ANYTHING alike, because i have known none who are, but lets pretend they are for the sake of argument.) So, these two men are the same age, have the same famliy back ground and personality (HA!). That's the only way you can really do an accurate study, and since it's impossible...well, lets just pretend it is.

The employer interviewing these two young men happens to have a daughter named Liberty, so she can't help but prefer Freedom over Shane ;) In a few years, that just may be the case, and all those Mikes and Ashleys will be changing their names to Moonshine and Starbeam so they have a good shot at employment.

I agree, Michelle. In 10-20 yrs there will be more adults with "unusual" names then there are now. Think of how many Tiffanies, Brittanies, Michelles, Angelas, and the like there are as young adults. Now think of our parents names... do any of us(adults) have parents that are named Tiffany, Brittany, Michelle, etc? Because so many children are being given unique and "unusual" names these days, we can only assume that when these children are adults, those names WILL be more common.

I'd rather be named Paisley then Brittany.

Run of the mill names are just that...

I like seemingly unique names :) I'm Rashaad, and the worst part of my name is that many people can't spell it correctly. I do think names can shape a person's personalitly. Now, that I think of it, I couldn't imagine myself named Joe.

I had mentioned on another thread that my siblings have unique names. We were never teased. It's nice when people put though in a name. When you say it it's always followed with "Interesting name, What does it mean or why were you named that."

My best friend who's parents were hippies, loves her name, Zoe Skylark (yes that is her name) she wouldn't change it for the world.

I love names that show the parents put a lot of thought and love into them. Not naming your child something that you love because you fear they may get teased because of it is foolish. Children can be cruel to each other, and will tease and be teased regardless of names. Perhaps it gives another option to tease about, but my name is Ana (fairly normal, people have heard of it, right?) and I was teased for my name (i.e. Ana banana, etc.) A better option than naming your child mike, joe, or michelle, would be instead to not put your child into the systum that only sets them up for such cruelties.

    Just my .02

    Peace, -Ana

I have a friend who named her little girl Freedom. I also have a friend who's little girl is named Legacy. Mine are Phoenix Jade and Karma Yvonne. Karma is a little more 'normal' than Phoenix...but I've met a couple people who have kids named Phoenix...so it's gaining popularity:)

I always wished I had a more unique name, I was named after my grandfather so I like the sentment but Jamie is just not that interesting (there were about 3 or 4 jamies in all my classes throughout school). My brother and sister are named Levi and Yana.

I would have loved to have an uncommon name growing up, but alas got stuck with what turns out to be the 11th most common female name in America.
It so annoying to always be one of several. If there is another one around (which often happened) I hate never being sure if it's me someone is reffering to or the other one/s.

So I had to take the initative, and have chosen Sage Cerridwen. Whether this will affect my employment prospects I've no idea. I'm going into media/writing of some description so you never know, being called Sage might work in my favour.
Eithier way I don't care, because it's a wonderful name and I want to be called it.

    People talk about unusual name and teasing, well here's an (ironic) example;
    Teasing potential......
Lisa = pizza, Pisa, Mona Lisa, Loopy Lisa, Cease, Lee-za (mispronouciation, not teasing just dumb)
    Sage = ? (answers on a postcard)

    Point proven :)

At lot of my favourite names are unusual, it's not strictly deliberate, I just happen to like those names, and hopefully my children too.
There is usually a good reason/story behind them. My favourite boys names are River and Lennon, after my favourite actor and Beatle respectivly.
They will have as a middle or nick name something perhaps more common to fall back on (e.g River Thomas could go by Tom, Lennon can be shortned to Len or Leo).

As somone who has hired and fired hundreds if not over a 1000 people in my life, this is perhaps the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard.

    AMEN!!!!!

People have heard me complain about this before, but here I go again. My real name, on my birth certificate, that my teenage hippy parents stuck me with is Govinda Starchild. I am 31 years old now and I have always fucking hated it!

It is so selfish to make your kid go through life with a name that makes people assume they:

    a) gave themselves that name
    b) are on drugs
    c) are in a cult
    d) all of the above.

If any hippy parents out there like freaky names, change your own freaking name, or name your dog that, but don't burden your kid with it.

I am in college. So, I'm working to get a degree and when I apply for jobs the only ones a name like Govinda Starchild will help me get are dishwashing jobs at Hare Krishna restaurants. That is so messed up. It's not fair.

I am considering changing my name legally, but I wonder how much that would involve reminding everyone I know for the next 20 years.

    Thanks, Mom and Dad.
