    hey guys...
I simply looove to see dread pics in this forum, and I got curious about the "acessories" some of you guys have on the locks...
    1) the beads... how do you put them in the hair and it doesn't falls of? does it demand the locks to be somewhat tight already, or can I start using it right away? (mine are a lil less then 1 month old). I'm certainly getting some for my locks...

    2) lines around the locks... is it sewing lines or of any special type? how is it done? just by rolling it around the dread or is there any kind of technique? would it have any effect on the knotting process?

it seems a bit obsessive, but don't pay attention to it =)
just answer what you know (or don't)...

beads... simply pick a bead that has a hole of smaller diameter than the lock of choice and force it up onto it. beads can be put on locks of all ages. as for lines... i have no idea what you are talking about.

i dont know what you mean about the lines either, but yeah with early dreads, usually the tips develop last so when mine were babies they would stay on just fine, but nowadays im sewing pop tabs in, i have chain links on my awesome goth pants that i put in, paper clips, safety pins, wire, cloth, quarters, and anything shiny that doesnt pull to hard...good fun

I assume you're talking about wraps? Like a string of hemo sort of woven around a dread? If so, I do not know too much about these, seen lots though.

And as for beads, goatboy pretty much summed it all up.

its so easy guys you have no idea. take a peice of hemp or whatever you want to use and tie it onto a dread and just keep wraping it around to cover lumps and holes. wrap it around how ever you like. leaving space in between or not. I usualy dotn cause when you take it off my dreads are always more lumpy. Also I found this awsome stuff the other day for making beads, if anyone wants one, seriously. pm me maybe we can work something out. I should post some pictures some day.

i guess what i meant with "lines" = wraps... does anyone ever done some homemade beads? I was thinking something like wood or natural raw material... and if the whole in the bead is smaller than the diameter, will it fit?! (without ruining the lock)

Here's what I do to get a bead on...I twist the tip of my dread till it's all tight, double it over and twist some more...so it's a nice hard little point to string through the bead. Then I shove it up as hard and as far as possible.

I was actually about to make a bead wrap. :) I have steel wire and lots of pretty beads...here's an awesome picture of kinda sorta what I want to do.

    (istockphoto.com is your friiieeeend...)

Just be prepared...dreads eat pretty things. Even after just a few days, esp. with hemp. For me, anyway, it was hard to get out last time. So make damn sure you want that stuff in there for good. Beads are pretty removable (whole beads, not peyote stiches or wraps.) though. I've had mine in for a few weeks and I can slip them around on the dread. I've found that the beads and hemp also help my hair dread up tremendously, so decoration is good for development AND it's fun!

You can make some cool beads out of fimo clay >.< but fimo is quite expensive. theres imitation fimo but some of its not as good (too oily or too dry etc)

And yes, beads do help with the locking process. They can help hold problematic roots together, and just generally tightening your locks up. If you wear them all the time, you'll find you have to rotate them once in a while, because the rope one's on will tighten up and you'll have to move it so it doesn't fall out.

PSA - Even if you wear your beads always, *always* take every one of them out for washing, and leave them out until you are 100% dry. :)

about wraps... doesn't it make the wraped spot harder to dry? Is it better to remove it before washing the hair and then put it back again or is there no real problem?

you would have to get a new wrap. its loose string, so you take it out, that one is over with.
i know the hemp ones can be bad to wash with. i would assume the string is too. ... so i'd say only put them in if you're not a person who has to wash every day.

while we're on the topic of accesories, does anyone know how to get hemp in your hair? like if i made a strand of hemp as though it was a necklace, but instead of making a necklace, attached it to my hair... i cant figure out a way to do it without disrupting my hair's flow too much.

Do you want it attached at the roots or lower down? You could probably tie it in, like macrame, at the root - with another strand or two so it's set apart from the rest (and you could remove it) Or, you could probably fashion some sort of sleeve/bead with hemp and slip it on that way. Only other thing I can think of is some sort of clip. :)

yeah if you have trouble getting a bead on, the diameter of the hole may be too small.

My ends are pretty straight so i twist them, wet them a tiny bit if necessary, and pull my hair through the bead. The beads stay on because your hair is fatter in some places and thinner in others and the bead will hold on the the fatter part.
