anyone else own a Chow Chow?..I think they have a horrible reputation for no reason other than the fact that they are very protective of their owner. they are also one person dogs and actually very good with children if raised with them. my chow is the bigggest baby in the whole world and i look at her and think, how can people not like chows?..they are the best behaved and smartest dogs ive ever owned.

I think it’s a shame that a dog can get a bad reputation simply because they are protective of their owner. And I have a feeling your little Chow Chow is fearless. Cheers!

I have a chow/retriever mix named Bear. He is the biggest baby. I love him so much. He has allergies really bad though and is having his ears worked on tomorrow.

I agree. My baby is bullmastiff (mom was purebredd bullmastiff), boxer, rottie and lab. He's fairly big, with a HUGE 'bully' head and rottie markings with a big white patch down his chest. And people are absolutely terrified of him. Looking at him, I seriously can't even see HOW anybody would be scared of him. Big sappy-looking brown eyes and a teddy-bear face with lots of wrinkles, it seems silly to fear him, really.

But it is truw, chows are easily trained to be viscious. So are rotties, dobermans, shepherds, bulldogs, etc. My aunt had one that ONLY the family members (her, her husband and their two sons) could get anywhere near. She was terrible. She turned on my uncle once and sent him to the hospital (because he took her to the vet). On the other hand, they bred her once (I was surprised that they could even get another dog near her) and kept one of the male puppies. His name is also Bear, and he's the biggest squishy furball EVER. When he first meets people, he runs and hides, and you have to approach him and earn his trust or he'll just cower in a corner. But Lady (the female) is pretty old... we used to be able to play with her, I think she just got VERY territorial as she got older, and possibly moreso after she was bred.

The wrong dogs in the (usually neglectful) care of the wrong people can give us ALL a bad name.

I have a part chow. We actually got our house insurance canceled because they found out she had chow in her. She is a sweety pie. Really quiet and shy. I can't imagine her biting somebody even in self defense but whateve.

My beloved departed Jack was part Rott. He also had the markings of a traditional rot but longer fur. Anywyas, one day he got loose and ran over to two ladies walking their itty bitty yorkie. He ran right up to the dog and the little dog just started shaking. Mind you Jack didn't do anything but sniff him. He wasn't a vicious dog either but he liked to play. Anyways I was over there in less then 30 seconds. The lady started SCREAMING at me. She was cussing and all out throwing a tantrum. She demanded I give her my name because she was going to march right down to the cop shop and get my dog taken away and put down. I calmly told her that I would give her my name if she gave me hers because she was slandering a minor (I don't know if it constituted as slander or what not but it was the 1st thing that came out of my mouth) I then told her my dog didn't touch hers and to have good luck with any charges she wanted to press and walked away from her and her little mutt. Never heard from her again but I find it amusing that people thought he was such a vicious looking dog when his action always proved otherwise.

With that said, I use to ride horses down the road and get chased by vicious dogs at my heals. I understand people's preconcieved weariness about dogs. It's not being fun being attacked by dogs!
