It seems like everyone can name off all kinds of celebrities and political figures these days...but, what about great minds? Who would be the great thinkers of our time? Scientists, philosophers, that kind of thing? No one I ask seems to be able to come up with many, if any. Kinda shows where our society's priorities are, but I wanted to see if you guys could help come up with some.

I agree fully on these three. And there's a Japanese guy too. Too stoned to think of his name at the moment.

i studied philosophy and shit like that, and into that came richard dawkins. i thought at the time that he was an opinionated fuckshit. but i went and read his book unweaving the rainbow and it really opened my eyes. it is really beautiful - he says that the greatest minds may have never been born. so a great mind or artist is only great compared with what we know. you should read how he writes it - for me who was always an artist not a scientist he makes science beautiful and poignant.

    and thats that,

    peace

I agree definately Stephen Hawking. Hehe, my friend ddnt even kno who he was. Einstein? Ok not exactly from our lifetime, but still. Ghandi, he was a pretty philosophical guy.

    George Carlin.

and I know what you are thinking..."those guys are comedians! not great thinkers!"

and there you would wrong because if you actually watch their stage shows and listen to what they say....they are simply talking political thought and philosophy but making it interesting with humor.

These 3 men have said more intelligent things regarding culture, society, the government, and mankind then most politicians and arcane but worshipped philosophers.

They make these thoughts more accessible and frankly, easier to understand.

Why read Neiztch when George Carlin can say the exact same things in layman terms and put it into persepective?

I saw Lance Armstrong on pbs the night before last, and while he might not be one of the greatest minds of modern day times, he seemed like a really smart guy. The man made alot of sense when he spoke.
