they are getting about as common as a lion attack in africa. I know when I grew up, we were taught that hippos were strictly vegetarian, and they are lazy, yawning creatures....... but more and more is coming out about these large animals. they can run up to 30 mph! they can also snap a crocodile in half with their large mouths. and they have been known to scavenge around for meals, and theyve also eaten their own kind. actually hippos have a real dark side to them, they commit infancide (kill babies of other dominant male hippos), they are cannibals, and they have attacked other animals to eat. they arent just grazers..... crazy huh?? imagine a 4 ton hippo coming at you at 30 mph. it would be like a truck running you over. that freaks me out! to me, they are more scary than an angry elephant.
buffalos cant chomp you in half though. yeah, buffaloes can run you over like a freight train, but so can cows...... hippos on the other hand, are aggresive, and they can sever a limb or even your torso. nasty fuckers. that have really sharp tusks
fucking hippos have those gigantic sharp teeth. vicious big ol' bastards. vegan doesn't mean nice, in any animal species. have you ever watched those videos of bull hippos fighting? the baby hippoes are often killed in the altercations if their mamas don't get them away.
yes they are. like I said before, a bull hippo will kill a baby hippo, if had the chance, especially if its not his offspring
actually hippos as vegetarians/grazers is a myth. there werent many studies on hippos in the past, and more and more they are finding out that they are more omnivorous than once thought, but that could be due to extreme conditions. they will eat dead carcasses, but hey, they are big animals, they need to eat. they have also killed prey. so, they arent strict vegetarians
ohh and believe it or not, their closest relative is neither a pig nor a horse..... hippopotamus means water horse, after all.... they are actually closely related to whales and dolphins. their dna are quite similair. they actually make noises underwater just like a dolphin would..... and all of their births are done under water.... so just imagine that.
just read that bit. they're primarily vegetarians but meat opportunists. incidents of predation are rare, since it's easier to just graze.
we saw the hippos at the denver zoo, btw, the large african animal display area is dismal looking. but anyway, you could hear the hippos underwater. they're very noisy. but the little pool they were in was too small and they didn't have their little fish buddies to give them their spa treatment. i imagine they have terrible skin problems there. the rhino was just stading on a cement platform. very sad.
