There are a lot of great points being made in this thread!

First of all, parents who allow their children to dress and act in a sexual manner are letting them express themselves, but that is not the problem. The problem is that they are letting their children express themselves in a derogatory way. There is nothing cute about a little girl feeling that she has to dress this way to be beautiful. There is nothing cute about promoting sexually transmitted diseases. There is nothing cute about 12 year-old mothers. This is similar to what someone else has already said, but the body itself is precious. How could parents want their daughters advertising their bodies as though they were items? I agree that the hormones that children consume today are horrific, and I also feel that there are no decent role models. Children turn on the television and see "musicians" parading around with barely any clothing on and play with their "Bratz" dolls (as someone else has already mentioned). I am not the universal judge of what is right or wrong, but when I see a toddler with a halter top, mini skirt, and a hat that says "little pimpette," I know that there is a problem (yes, I have seen this). Parents need to educate their children and set an example. Children learn through what they observe.

Strawberry, I agree with your entire post! That was well-said.

Hmm... what do cell phones and mp3 players have to do with it? Plenty of 13 year old girls who own these things do not act like "sluts" (and plenty who don't do).

I don't think tight pants and low tops have anything to do with "no smart parents". It think it is more of a fashion trend (don't get me wrong, I am against the sexualisation of children - I just question whether you can blame bad [or stupid] parenting for this).

According to your profile you are 17. That's not much older than 13.

soooooo thinkign about sex at age 13 now makes you out of control. obviously im seriously out of control, sine i was thinking about sex since at least age 12, masturbatin gsince then too. took me til age 16 to figure out orgasming but i was still fantasizing since age 12. obviously im a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge slut with 6 partners... in 5 yeras of being sexually active. jesus, this is the silliest line of logic. thinkign about sex is normal and healthy. i knew i was too young to actually fuck any1 but i still thought about it at lesat once a week

I don't think that anyone is trying to say that teenage hormones are wrong, it is just how they are acted upon. It is one thing to be hormonal and another to have no self respect. I am the same age as ALawlessLulu69420, and believe it or not, I have noticed a drastic change since the couple of years ago when I was 10/11/12/13. My friends and I were interested in playing outside and having innocent fun. It is not like that anymore. I am not a fan of 17 and 18 year-olds, or anyone of any age, dressing like prostitutes, as well. It is just especially saddening when children act like this. Childhood only comes once and ends fast. Why not enjoy it while it lasts?

I don't know what part of the country you grew up in, but girls were doing the same thing at that age when I was 12-13. They weren't dumb (well, some were) and they didn't want to get molested. It's just kids trying things out. You sound remarkably angry for the way fads are changing.

It's going to be a 180. Petticoats, but they'll all wear glowing disks around their ankles.

12 year old mothership is also not increasing since the 80's, nor are reported child molestations.

I agree that fashion has turned somewhat more provacative, but I don't think that leads automatically to not having self respect.

My friend Jessie dresses in clothes that would have her killed in Saudi Arabia. She's also a kickboxer and one of the most confident people I know. Equating style with personality is ill advised.

Well, I don't know what goes on everywhere else, but a lot of girls in my area feel that it is shameful if they have not lost their virginity by age 13. I could have cared less about that, and my friends felt the same way. The world is so fast-paced now that people live on their cell phones, including children. I am not associating technology with the argument over sexuality, but I am saying that life is very rushed. Children are expected to grow up much faster than they should, and it is a shame.

I have a 13 year old little sister, she has a cell phone and an mp3 player, and she is shy and sweet as can be. She spends her free time on the soccer field, playing her cello, or having fun with the neighbor girl next door. Just about all her friends have cell phones, and none of them wear low rider jeans and thongs. Sure there are some girls in her school that wear a bit too much makeup (a fashion flaw committed by many young girls trying to figure the whole makeup thing out) and some that make you wonder where their parents are, but on the whole they remind me of how things were when I was 13, of course we didn't have cell phones and mp3 players, but you bet your ass I took my walkman just about everywhere I went.

I just don't see how kids having cell phones and mp3 players has anything to do with children having sex at a young age. Not to mention when I was 12-13 I always heard the "look at kids these days...when I was young all I wanted to do was play outside or with my dolls" coming from people who are no longer young - and in ten or twenty years plenty of these current 13 year-olds will probably be saying similar things.

I'm not even sure clothing trends are more provacative now than the past. My mother has said that when she was a teenager if your skirt was longer than the tips of your fingers when your arms were at your side then it was definitely uncool.

There have ALWAYS been the kids that are trying to grow up to fast. I don't see what cell phones and mp3 players have to do with it. I agree that parents need to help guide their children to make smart choices and respect their bodies, but parents have been succeeding and failing at that practically forever. I don't think it is getting worse, I just think that now that we're older and don't have our own 13 year old friends that we hang out with anymore some may only be taking notice of the trampy-dressed ones in the mall, and not the ones hanging out on their friends trampolines all summer.

my great grandma was married and raising children by the time she was 14. i'd already had the care for two smaller siblings for 4 years by then, from birth. i started having sex when i was 14 and never had any problems with that. our modern teenager is a 20th century construct and not really true to the animal nature. sure, some mature faster than others, circumstances being what they are. i still think they should be protected from those who would abuse their naivete, but they're just doing what their hormones and what nature tells them to do. as to the parents, it's hard to say what's going on there. many of those parents just don't know WHAT to do.

If you want to blame it on someone then blame it on the media.

Parents can nag all they want, but in the end, they aren't "cool" enough to have the final say on how their children act and dress. Many girls these days are influenced solely on what they see on MTV (and what's on MTV, well, it's not good.) It's turning individuals with potentially lovely minds into the media's bitches. Let's face it; let's get a reality check.. modern media has slowly been tearing down everything us as women have worked so hard for and it's tearing down much more than just that as well.

But, these girls that you speak of are still human beings.. they are certainly worthy of being loved and appreciated. They don't need to be ridiculed and berated for the way that the media has guided them.. they need help and guidance.

Also, I wanted to mention that the worry isn't so much in the style of clothing and the increase in technology..

it's more so in the lack of self-esteem and the lack of individuality being portrayed. Women are being seen as tools and if they don't look a certain way then people go as far as to berate them and that's the scary part.

You can have mine. The only reasons I own one are to have easy communication if my car breaks down and incase of an emergency. As for just chatting with friends, that is what my phone at home is for. I must be missing something because I don't see what the big hype is about cell phones. I guess I am just not a phone-person.

The only thing about certain "kids these days" that bothers me is the same thing that bothers me about certain people in ANY age bracket: rudeness and purposeful insensitivity toward others.

I can deal with rude behaviour caused simply by ignorance or neccessity (ie. living in a tough city). A lot of people genuinely don't know any better than to behave the way they do and by being a kindhearted person I just hope to set a good example, or at least be able to give them a smile... Without letting them bring me down. :)

I think its because of the videos they watch these days, yes, it upsets me, they dont need to be dressing like this, and their parents should be telling them about whats wrong or write and how to dress. Just because older women on television, such as rap music videos, wear little to no clothing, doesn't make it right for a 12 or 13 year old too. Thats what upsets me, Because all these girls watch these videos that are setting a bad example for our future generation.

I really think that there is nothing wrong with these kids having cell phones or mp3 players as long as they have been taught to value the tings they have and realize that these things are expensive and shouldn't just be thrown around. Kids need to realize that parents buy these things with hard earned money, so they can't just be expected as gifts.
Also, girls wearing "slutty" clothes does bother me, but when I was 13 I was exactly the same, it was all about being an "adult" and showing off and getting attention. Maybe not the smartest choice but it made me learn alot of things about men and also other girls and now I am old enough to dress myself in other ways. So, I think as long as girls are educated about these things there isn 't a problem.

cell phones and mp3 players aren't really the problem although, i question any parent that gives their young girl a cell phone with unlimited minutes/access to the big wide world because she's not ready for it and not mature enough for it. the slutty clothes and behavior is a problem BECAUSE of her blooming sexuality. at this age a young girl has no idea what to do with these hormones. and boys this same age are also becoming sexually aware with their own hormones popping boners without even knowing what's happening to them. if she's dressed like a sex object then SHE IS a sex object whether she wants to be one or not. this also makes her a target for older boys and men who find her sexually attractive and ESPECIALLY predators. she's young, stupid and niave, she has not idea how cunning a predator can be.

leaving predators aside however, how in the world are men/boys supposed to know what her age is if she's dressed like someone ready to have sex and acting like someone who wants sex looking much older than her actual age. she's doing it because of the great male attention and it's a very powerful thing. she's wayyy to young to handle it, imo and has the rest of her life to play around with her sexuality.

i did it all by age 14 and was one of these girls in my day. i had no parental controls and would lie to older boys AND men about my age. IF this situation were today and a young girl who lies about her age gets pregnant by an adult male HE CAN BE PROSECUTED AND SENT TO JAIL AS A PEDOPHILE and forced to register as one for the rest of his life. IF young girls are going to be permitted to dress and behave like adult sluts then they should be responsible for thieir own actions and MEN should not be prosecuted for persuing these little vixens. instead their parents should be prosecuted for not protecting their child from her own OUT OF CONTROL HORMONES.
