Man I was so blazed last night and watched this on a burned DVD, anyone else seen it? I really loved it, despite the obviously innacurate description of the Maya culture, and the lack of ANY inclusion of their scientific, agricultural, or astronomical advances. It was still a good movie and being ripped out of my mind definitley had me looking at it with an open mind
I haven't seen it, but I got the impression that the Maya weren't done much justice because it's set during the decaying stage of their culture. Did it really just seem like they omitted things for the sake of a good movie?
Well, I wouldnt say omitted, rather, over exaggerated, especially when you see how much Maya on Maya violence there is. But, over all I found it to be a very good movie, although it left me with the impression that Mel Gibson was trying to convey the message of pointing out the mistakes and impending doom caused by our uber consumption, in our modern society, and that some believe that we are to be "saved" by Christ, since the white men come at the end of the movie, and the barbaric Maya root themselves out. Just a lame, uneneccasary lesson being told that we already know, and it is impossible at this point to go back, unless we are rooted out lol. And I think the omission of the positive aspects of the Maya were only omitted for the sake of the action in the movie, because at parts you can tell that Mel's intention for people who really get the movie is in enjoying the story, and that all of the Mayan advances should be already researched by anyone with half a brain and an interest in Mexican history. So yes, you are rite, he did shut a window of oppuritunity on educating people of the wonders the Maya discovered, but over all its still a decent film
i would much rather watch a film that educated the people of the Mayan's history any day, the mayan's are just a very interesting culture to learn about. and wait, the 'white men' came at the end of the movie? they were long gone before any white men set foot in Mexico.
Yea I know, I know, but its better then nothing And yes, they were white, but the Maya were not gone when white men came, they had only abandoned their cities
That movie may not have been "historically accurate", but who gives a shit. It's a fictional movie based on a real people. As long as you know it's not going to be a history lesson, i thought it was fucking badass. Sometimes a good violent beat um up movie is just what the doctor ordered and this one is fucking hardcore. I was totally baked off of my nuts when I saw it and I loved it.
