Hello! My pup is just about 5 months old so its time to start thinking about getting him castrated. I figure it would only be fair to set him up with a female dog before I have him fixed. But it not so easy there are no female dogs around here so I would have to take him to town by cab and that will cost me $50 round trip. I am actually thinking of putting an ad in the newspaper and them maybe someone can bring their female here and we can let the dogs go down to the pond together. (it would be more romantic for them) I would really like him to father a litter but I don’t know anyone who has a female dog that is not fixed. Anyway cheers!
6 million unwanted puppies and kittens are killed every year in the USA alone. 6 frecking MILLION. In Ohio where I live the pounds are overrun with puppies and it is a daily occurance that puppies as young as 6 weeks old are euthanized by the dozens during puppy season. There are 6 million "just one litters" and each owner is responsible for the bloodshed. Even if every single one of your puppies is adopted into a home that will be responsible and keep them for the next 15 years (which is unlikley as 80 percent of ALL dogs/cats adopted out as young will end up in the pound at least once with in their first year of thier life/adoption and in some rural places as many as 90 percent of those do not come out alive) bringing them into the world will sentence already born puppies to death. Your pups will take homes away from those already born who will then have to die because your pups took their place. I urge you to do some volunteer work. Talk to vets. Ask to shadow a dog warden for a day....watch the light go out of the eyes of dozens of animals for that day and you may change your mind about that "just one litter".
Your dog has no need at all to have a "one night stand" before being neutered. I don't agree with the idea that they'd cause already born puppies to die, it is not always easy to find good homes for puppies. Mixed breed puppies can be even harder to find good homes for. I would hold off neutering until he is about a year old or so though to allow him to develop properly before taking away his hormones.
unless you personally are going to raise all the puppies, this is an absolutely horrible idea. I do not say this to be rude. Also, if you are absolutely in the need to see your dog hump, take hm to a dog park after he's fixed. Many dogs do this as a dominance gesture.
Don't wait. Once he humps he won't stop regardless of if being "fixed". He won't know what he is missing, and would probably thank you if he knew how.
Actually there are a lot of reasons dogs should NOT be neutered early. This is an excellent article about growth problems associated with early S/N. It really is not in the best interest of the animal to have their hormones removed before they are mature. http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html
Hello! I didn’t want to see the dogs hump - I was hoping it would be romantic for the dogs so I would have given them some privacy - but I would have sent Sundance down to keep an eye on them - just to make sure they didn’t go to far - (off the property). Any way I can now see that in a dogs life it’s not about romance - its numbers. I might be able to find good homes for 7 pups but not all the other dogs that will be born from those pups and there is also the fact that people get pups then give them up when they become a bit of a hassle. I am going to take the advice of BadBlackDog and wait a year before castration and mostly keep Pup tied up until then so he don’t wander off. Cheers!
