The Hippies from The Haight had no antimosity for the soliders,at least the ones I knew didn't.. they'd come down to buy weed or psychedelics, they always had money and contributed to the pot.. They didn't wanna be there in the war..most of the GIs got better smoke then we did in Cambodia, Opium wasthe big thing for them.. a lot of heroin addicts were born from the VN war.. to forget. My first husband 1966 went to nam and never came back.. I got a flag and 64 dollars a month. sh
I remember too that I had no hatred for the soldiers going or coming from Nam. I felt bad for them and their families. I knew people that were forced to go and heard stories of those that refused to fight getting killed on the front lines by their own people. But that is another hotbed of a topic I won't go into. I have to tell you SH that My heart is very heavy and sad for your loss so long ago. I have been a member of the "League of Families" since 1978, and have been wearing two POW bracelets ever since....and the same two because those two have never come back ! My heart goes out to you ! Peace and Love to you and your family !
I haven't been here for a long time. I find it interesting that this thread is still alive. Some folks have pics of vet protests in their post here. I was at some of those demos. I know some of those men personally. For those of you who think those of us who have served in wars should suffer eternal damnation, don't worry we do. More vets who served in SE Asia have committed suicide than died over there. Smile and giggle about that the next time you're in a drum circle or passing a bong. How much support have you given to any of the GI's who have refused orders to Iraq? Have you even sent a postcard to their families or to those sitting in jail? How many times have you been to a base to hand out leaflets or tell the GI's you'll support them or hide them if they refuse orders? Not many I'll bet. During Nam people for peace set up coffee houses and helped publish GI anti war newspapers. Maybe you should remember some history before you cop some holier than thou attitude. Yeah some guys decided to go into the military rather than prison. I truely wonder how many of you keyboard "peace warriors" would jump at the chance to spend a few in cell if prison was staring you in the face for refusing a draft. I'll live with the horrors of war the rest of my life. I've dedicated my life to peace since 1970. Landing at Travis and being able to hang at Peoples Park, Frisco, and Santa Cruz while serving out my enlistment help me stay sane. Folks knew I was a "Nammer" and did all they could to comfort me and my bros. Like a poster above I've been spit on, but by assholes who didnt like my anti war stand. Like I've said above. The stories about the anti war peeps spitting on vets and GI's are BULLSHIT! I'll say so untill I see documented proof. I think those of you on this thread who think it's such a great idea don't have the gumption to talk with a group of GI's or Vets unless they're wearing a Vets For Peace or Vietnam Vets Against The War patch. If you're interested in what GI's and Vets did to end the war watch Sir No Sir! or The Winter Soldier Investgation. SH. My heart is with you and your loss. GH My bracelet came home. Peace Them Home
somebody has to protect this country.i no many people who were in vietnam and ill tell u what, i would never do them wrong. they didnt like killing people and ur right, their not the same as they were before the war,but jut think of what would happen if their were no soldiers. we would have no defense. i, like everyone else would love to live in peace but until we get that thru to the government we have to protect ourselves. i believe in our troops. the government is our problem.
I feel it is my duty to bring something up in this thread. I have stated how I feel about this particular issue, and what I have known to be fact from my own personal experience. But I must add that even though I don't agree with the governments sometimes aggressive tendencies carried out in the use of warfare..... I am indeed a soldier ! I am no longer on active duty, but I will always have that as a part of my life. I was a Gunnery Seargent in the United States Marine Corps, and I am proud of that fact ! Some of you who read this and have posted in this thread may have negative views regarding this fact, but let me tell you something. When I or any service member joins the military or was drafted, and long before they even get to basic training; they take an oath. In plain terms this oath is very clear....You promise as a member of the U.S. Military to fight and possibly die for everyone in this country. EVERYONE ! I want to emphasize this point...We Military men and women promise to DIE if need be for people we do not even know ! All to protect the freedoms that you all hold dear and largely take for granted. And that means everyone ! The people that did the spitting on returning Nam vets, the people that protested the war, the people that didn't go, the brothers and sisters that have been killed in battle and those yet to be, the vets from previous wars who fought for freedom, and on and on. To those of you who put the military men and women down the most; do you really think you would be able to say what you want here on these forums without those people who have PROMISED to lay down their lives for you. I'll answer for you....NO, you wouldn't ! It's easy to say the soldiers do this and do that, but we are trained to follow orders to keep people alive, not take lives without regard for life itself. War is an ugly thing without a doubt, and unfortunately it will always be a part of this existence on earth...sad but true. It has been true since the dawn of time. But the next time you want to put down a soldier for his or her actions or the fact that they are a soldier; remember the promise we service people gave to protect YOU. And don't get flip and say, "well we didn't ask you to" because hey...you didn't ask us not to ! Peace and Love !
***polite applause*** "...you didn't ask us not to !" I think that's what us anti war folks are doing, loud and clear. Hell with what's past. What's done is done. Nobody can do a friggin' thing about the past, except LEARN something from it. It's time to move on, time to throw out our worthless government and start over. Dammit, I read the Declaration of Independance last night and it pisses me off that after all those people who signed it, including a direct decendant of mine - William Hooper -, and suffered for it, actually just wasted their time. We need ANOTHER one, pretty much the same as the old one with just a bit of wording changed. And I'LL sign it this time!
thank you granpa! you said very well what ive been trying to since the begining of this thread! earthmom, i want you to listen very carfuly to the words that are being put forth, your own words also! your decendants sig. was not in vein! he put that on a document so as to foster a new and better way! before he did that i expect your european ancestors did things that were not shall we say alotogether respectable! but there was a vision, that was worth fighting for as is yours. a different typ of fight but a fight, but a fight non the less. was the constitution and bill of rights not worth the suffering that william hooper endured? did he lay his life on the line? was he deserving of spit??? i understand what you say, but the reality right now is not every person in power wants peace! i agree with you that it takes the common man to say to the powerful ,this is what we want, but until all pepoles do that at the same time, we are stuck with war! not tyrany, war. this current war i s not for the ideals of william hooper at least as far as i can tell. remember that the declaration and the bill was siend by the ritch an powerful! but at least they had a vision! wether that vision was to enrich themselves or to truly free the masses from tyrany is a matter of speculation, in my opinion. so you try and build your argument on a ancestor that sent others to die to protect your freedoms????? i geuss i could be rude and say spit! but i wont. that just causes conflict.
Respect the people that defend our country. I don't agree with the war on iraq, or bush, but at least support the troops who are fighting. least you can do.
Support the troops. U-huh. That is one of the most generic sayings I have ever heard. What does it mean? Anything anybody wants it to. Some would support the troops by refusing to dis anything they do. Some would support them by sending care packages. Some would support them by getting them the hell out of harms way. Personally, I feel sorry for the troops who joined up thinking things were going to be all good. Education, jobs, world travel. Yea! But at this point, I REALLY feel the troops should be supporting US. There's a BIG difference between people who have created and signed a document which is intended to bring relief from a dominating government, and people who go to war to do somebody elses dirty work and shoot to kill anything and anybody who gets in their way....
Ohh...yeaahhh...now I remember.Yeah that was me.I did it.Cleared my throat, reared back my head and spat.Unlike the story though I didn't miss.Gave him a dirty look, his paants got wet and he ran off.
Nice, off-topic post, that didn't even mention the subject of this thread. You just disrespected MY RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH. You are attempting to silence me with insults. Well that doesn't work on this site. We don't allow ppl to stifle free speech in any way. So you're banned for awhile, until you learn to respect free speech, and as a lesson to others who would attack those who speak their minds here.
Just goes to show there is no free speech on the internet, only websites and webmasters.Free speech goes both ways...
Didn't target civilians? HAHAHAHAHA...Tell it to Bill Calley. That aside, I didn't think it was right to spit on soldiers; after all, if they were stupid enough to go to Vietnam, well, that was its own punishment.
The sodiers who went to Vietnam didn't punish themselves, they punished everyone else who stayed home, including the Vietnamese. They deserved to get spit on, just as the sodiers in Iraq do today. Being spit upon is too good for them!
I will never support our troops...I don't support anyone who fights off in a war. Especially not wars like the Vietnam or Iraq War. They killed people, they should be able to take a little saliva...actually, they deserved worse.
