I've been wondering, it feels like nothing ever happens in nyc, like gatherings and stuff... I know the convention here for the republicains is quite a big thing and alot of people are coming over to protest like on monday in central park which i am looking forward to attend btw. If u guys hear about anything i'd really like to know... thanx peace and love to u all Drea Floyd
If it feels like nothin's ever goin on in nyc, then you're just not lookin hard enough. No, there aren't huge festival-type gatherings here, but there are definitely always tons of shows happening. I always feel like there are so many shows here, but not enough time/money to do them all. Unfortunately, I noticed that you're pretty young, and probably can't get into a lot of cool shows that happen at smaller venues like the Bowery Ballroom or Mercury Lounge, etc. I find out about a lot of cool events from different message boards for different bands i'm interested in, as well as on jambase.com. You should also check out the magazine Time Out NY, they have tons of great listings for different types of events, from concerts, to theater, comedy, museum exhibits, all kinds of stuff. If you're into jazz, there's a free Chick Corea show tonight at 8pm as part of a summer lincoln center music program. It's around 62nd street and Amsterdam Ave. Central Park often hosts free shows in the summer that are pretty good, they recently had a north mississippi all stars show there, and also had an antibalas afrobeat orchestra show there. Also, this place called PS 1 in Long Island City has these parties every saturday (i think next saturday is the last one for this summer) from like 3-9pm. There are art exhibits, DJ's, and people just come and hang out, it's great. Haven't been there in awhile, don't know if they charge, but if they do, it's likely to be only like $10. And you don't have to worry about age there. Hope you're able to find some interesting stuff!
