so i step out back, spark up a joint and just squat down on my deck against the wall and smoke the joint, as i'm gettin ripped, i start to look around, so i look up cause i forgot it was a full moon, and i see a ring of light around the moon! i'm asuming it's because of the upcomming eclipse, but it got me thinkin/trippin lol, pic:
Yeah, it doesn't have anything to do with the upcoming eclipse. Its usually just called a halo. It is light being refracted through ice crystals in the air. They look cool though.
You're right. This is also the same reason that stars appear to twinkle. The earth's atmosphere distorts our view, and this is called "seeing."
Yeah, the moon often does that because of the atmosphere and ice... I always think of a Crosby, Stills, and Nash song where they mention it, but I can't remember the name of the song (ironic, eh?)
I got the rain thing from my friend who studies astrology, we saw a ring like that one night a few weeks ago. It's kind of funny, last night my gf was just talking about some rainbow she saw around the moon, but I didn't quite know what she was talking about, it wasn't until when she brought it back up today that I made the connection. So I guess you guys both saw the same thing.
I remember watching an episode of "Clarissa Explains it All" back in the day (when it first ran). There was an episode where she saw a halo around the moon and it meant that it would snow the next day.... it's bizare what the mind keeps ain't it?
i also was taught that a ring around the moon meant impending rain because of the humidity in the air - i was also taught that if you count the number of stars you see within the ring it will tell you how many days until it rains.....strange bit of knowledge but i've often found it to be true the next lunar eclipse this year will be another total one, occuring on august 28th - there are two partial solar eclipses this year, one on march 18th and the other on september 11th
so 15 more days until the solor eclips? thats when the moon goes over the sun right? what time a day does that happen? or do we have to look at the sun all day until it does it
