Do any of y'all have family that just doesn't get it. I mean close family living with you...not the ones you just see one thanksgiving or something. I've even made my whole bunch watch the meet your meat video...it did help with my hubby, but my kids have just gone right on the way they were. I don't want to force anyone, i want them to come to it on their own.

    But that's beside the point...
yesterday was the worst day i've had in a while. My daughter was home sick, i had to work, then they called my dad went into the hospital, and will have to go into a nursing home from there(he's only 60 and refuses to come stay w/family...doesn't want to be a burden), then my son's teacher called to tell me he's failing two classes badly(a usual a-b honor roll student). So then, after I go to see my dad in the hospital, and come home, what is my hubby doing....
COOKING OUT HAMBURGERS ON THE GRILL FOR SUPPER!!!!
I'm sure he was trying to be nice, and just not thinking...but we live in the middle of west texas cattle country. There's not a Bocca burger to be had within an hours drive. So, I had popcorn, and soup while they had cheeseburgers. I don't know...what he did might not even seem upsetting to anyone else, but it was just on top of a crappy day, it just rubbed me the wrong way I guess. Anyway, more than anything i guess i needed to vent somewhere. lol

    Peace and love,
    Bridgett

my advice: learn to cook veg food. sounds like you don't have a lot of recipes at your disposal. I wouldn't recommend a boca burger if you know how to make some simple veggie stir fry, some tofu/noodles or some stuffed potatoes or something simple like that. Don't worry so much about them eating meat. Once they see all the good stuff vegetarians CAN eat, they'll be a bit more receptive. I wouldn't want to be veg if all I ever saw the vegetarian in the house eat was popcorn and soup.

Aww, I'm so sorry! It does sound like your husband was trying to help out - please don't be TOO upset with him ;)

My mom is the one that doesn't get it in my family. And I'm over at her house at least twice a month helping with this, that or the other thing so it's not every day, but it's enough to get under my skin. Most days I just raid her fridge for salad fixings, but some holidays are REALLY tough at that house. But I know what you mean about having to make-do on whatever you can scrounge while everyone else has a super fun meal.

I've found a few ways to get around this. First, I make sure there are enough veggie alternatives around that I can balance a meal at all times. That means thinks like pulling a portion of a dish out before adding meat to it for me, bringing a small dish with me to my parents' house, and occasionally making a completely different meal for myself. I've also started bringing a dish with to share with my parents. My dad LOVES trying new foods, and has enjoyed trying my meat-free dishes on the side of his chicken. Maybe you could slowly "sneak" a few new dishes into their diet? Also, since I am 1/4 of our family AND the one that does most of the cooking I suggested awhile back that one day a week we only eat vegan foods. There was a little fighting at first, but they agreed. I've worked hard to introduce them to foods I knew they would love & show them how great vegan foods can be, and it helps a lot! We have a Fresh & Natural Foods store (almost identical to Whole Foods) near my house, and I've taken the family through there a few times to show them ALL of the alternatives out there. Even my husband has found things he loves there - like vegetarian pemmican & jerky and grilled mushroom-cap "burgers." My kids beg for veggie dishes more often than not now, and I'm able to cook just one dish more often :)
    love,
    mom

lol very true about the popcorn and soup. It wasn't all there was to eat...just all i felt like fixing after the day I'd had. I was just spent at that point. That was one of the irritating things...there's was lots that could have been cooked, and he chose something he knew i wouldn't eat. No biggie, really...i felt better after venting a bit ago...just try not to blow at my family, esp. when I know they have good intentions.

    Here's what I see:
your hubby was feeding his kids. I know a pack of mamas who'd LOVE to see that.
your hubby is not veg. He's going to cook what HE wants (and by gads, it was outside, and not in the house: bonus points.)
you are one of four people, and you don't get to decide for everyone else...unless you want to alienate your kids.

focus the stress on the important things: your son's school performance, your fears around your dad, not on a guy trying to be nice.

and stock the freezer with quickies for those nights.

I agree with everyone, your hubby was trying to help out; In my household it is only my husband and I. He is not vegetarian and will revert to hamburgers or peanut butter and jelly.

I also relate to the Homeschool Mama, my family seems to go out of their way not ensure there isn't anything I will eat. I have even brought prepared dishes over for it be thrown out before it could get served. Yet my mother will go out of her way to cater to anyone elses culinary requirements or desires. For almost 20 years, I 'watched' everyone eat during the holidays.

He is a male from Texas. If he doesn't eat red meat at least every other day he will spontaneously combust.

actually, I know a fair amount of veggies in Texas, male and female.
now, if the neighbors notice, you could get dragged from a hunters' truck.
