I have a lot of issues with companies that offer ADSL such as the fact that even though they offer better speeds and have the chance to offer even higher, the cable companies seem to offer reliability and, to a large extent, seem more able to meet the speeds they advertise more often. I have very few gripes about cable companies in the UK except that for business users it makes more sense to choose ADSL - I just wondered what other people would think about those statements and what their experiences are
hey sentient! here in the states it is a touchy subject, Cable vs DSL. Cable is clearly the better choice though unless you live next door to the DSL place, then it doesnt matter. in my experience with both, Cable Internet blew dsl out of the water. besides, they usually offer a nice package deal with Cable Internet. -joe
Im on cable and it works great but the company I'm with may be thinking of switching to ADSL which is awful - so its just becoming a hot topic in the uk too -
wow. switch to ADSL? that would be expensive for the company to do the switch, and for what?... well, those kinds of companies usually have things figured out but from what i gather, they may lose business.
Thats exactly what I think - I always wonder why they havent switced everone over to optical cable so we can all have 10Gigps connections etc - imagine that - pages would load before you'd even thought of clicking them - erm come to think of it they do ! well sometimes they do when Internet Explorer is on the blink
I have one friend on Clearwire, and another on ATT DSl, guess who gets better connections speeds? I am still on dialup, but I have my reasons right now.
It varies, you really have to look at your specific situation and the costs of the service. I had cable and it was great until they kept loading down my "split" until things crawled during peak usage. I switched to DSL when was more consistent and slightly faster, but ended up being a lot more expensive (I also had to have an Earthlink account in addition to the DSL fees - something they told me after I committed to the change). Then, cable came back with an offer of twice the bandwidth at 2/3 the price, so I went back to cable. Since then I've moved and the only thing available is dial-up, I'm in the middle of rewiring the house for a second line. Even satellite isn't available here, although the phone and cable companies say broadband is coming "any day now". They've been saying that for a year now.
i'd take either one if someone would give it to me. until they do, or until it becomes "an intitlement" i'll continue to get by with dial-yup =^^= .../\...
I haven't found a reliable DSL in my area. I do find it incredible that we have 3GHz computers and are still on 56K phone lines. People a hundred years from now will look back and say, 'What were they thinking?' We could have a world class internet if we spent even a tiny fraction of the half a trillion $$$ that we've squandered on the most recent war. .
Hmm I believe that you can get near that on leased line fibre optics but in reality all that bandwidth and speed comes at a massive price and I think at the moment its for large business or mega-corporates to play with. infact I'm not sure what the top speeds attainable are - cant remember whether its 1 gig - 6 gig or 10 gig and cant be bothered to look - because one things for certain that kind of speed will never be available to home users in the next 20 years because theyre dedicated lines - hmmm then again I still remember saying "WOW WTF you mean they do a 80MB hard drive now "?????? perhaps youre right it should be attainable for home users and maybe it will happen
i just remembered someone (the head at a develpement company) telling me that there was some kinda new DSL coming out that has matched the download rate and upload rates to meet in the middle. DSL upload rate is usually only about 15% of your download rate and they got it to match 99% equal but it steals from dowload rate. in any event, i usually have download speeds that exceed T1 and occasionally T3 lines. although, my upload rate is not as good as T1. back when i had DSL i could only get 300k to 700k download; 30k-50k upload rate. when using the TCP/IP protocol, rendering/processing anything downloaded, is directly dependant on the upload rate. basically, everything that is downloaded must be uploaded too. the Internet uses TCP/IP as the standard, primary protocol. if you have a single computer and dont care much for performance, i think that normal DSL would be fine for you. if you have multiple computers on a network connecting to the Internet, then cable is my recomendation. i think this new DSL is what bussinesses usually use for small-time Internet provider. crap, if i had to i will just hook my laptop into the phoneline and manually dial out to a server for free Internet. talk about old-school ARPA Net.
